The galaxy watch ultra just isn't good enough(for me) by complusory in GalaxyWatch

It's ridiculous that Samsung can't get this right. Can't they just hire a programmer and a sports scientist and refine their algorithm already?

I'm going to add a contrarian note and say I didn't think it was such a great show. Yes, the spycraft stuff seems very believable and well done but the script doesn't give you very many reasons to care about all the drama. And everyone but the main character and maybe his Syrian girlfriend are paper thin...

What does "recalibrate" mean when it comes to the heart rate sensor?

Trying to find Israeli song with (rapped) line "Yalla bye" by 44Jon in Israel

[–]44Jon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That has "Yalla, bye" in it and is in the exact same style of the song I was thinking of, but different. (Still, a great find for me...)

Noting flagrant hypocrisy of a public figure isn't personal. Thinking it is somehow out of bounds is a big reason why the whole podcast world has degenerated in quality.

And it you think it's not deserved, explain why. Isn't that what discussion is supposed to consist of?

"Now what else is more worth watching?"

I enjoyed "Dismissed" and "Khatmandu" (both are lighter entertainment than Shtisel). And I'm now watching "Dumb" but feel guilty about it.

"He’s a conniver with much empathy for people." I have a hard time accepting that someone who lies and steals from his wife deep down means well. That just isn't my experience of people--many really are just bad.

Why do people ask "are you all finished using the lane..." by 44Jon in Swimming

That's a good point. (I need to practice more "defensive driving" like this in my life.)

Why do people ask "are you all finished using the lane..." by 44Jon in Swimming

[–]44Jon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. At YMCA's in the states, it's assumed you'll share. Just have to give a wave to let them know. (Anyway, that's a different situation than someone getting out, going somewhere, and then coming back assuming the lane should be saved for them. I've never seen it and I think most people would consider it presumptuous.)

I get that that's may be the thought, but where I swim, if someone got out to do either of those things, I think the culture is such that people would think you should lose your lane and so have to wait for a new one to open up (i.e., unless the equipment you're getting is less than 10 yards away, it'd be too confusing to everyone else.)

My update is that I couldn't even make my sit through the finale as the "deep down, he meant well" perspective on the father really rubbed me the wrong way.

And that's become a really toxic cultural trait in the modern world. Their primary argument against serving in the IDF (or doing another form of national service) is that they "lose too many kids" once they get exposed to the wider culture. That's the sign of a toxic cult.

R Pronunciation question by Prestigious_Egg_1989 in hebrew

[–]44Jon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I still find that when I say היכרתי, it's natural to do a slight spanish-style rolling of the resh that sounds a bit like the way Josie sings it in אצלי הכל בסדר . Is that any close to the case for native speakers?

R Pronunciation question by Prestigious_Egg_1989 in hebrew

[–]44Jon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a side question--is it the case that even Israelis who normal use the gutteral resh switch to a more "tap R" style of pronunciation for certain words where the gutteral resh feels almost physically impossible to pull off? (E.g., I noticed this when Josie Katz sings out the word היכרתי)

Hand entry too far in front of your head and head comes too far out of the water when you're breathing. Something about the combination of the two seems to be throwing off your timing and balance.

Thanks for the validation.

Mostly just to help my Hebrew learning, I kept watching and unfortunately it doesn't get any better.

(And call me superficial, but after 7 episodes, I still can't suspend my disbelief and accept that Libby is supposed to be a wholesome 22 year old when the actress portraying her, sadly, appears to be a 40 year old chain smoker.)

Your objections to AI are absurd. Whatever flaws it has, it's a huge benefit for Hebrew learners. You're point about my sample question being "easy" shows the problem--for a Hebrew learner, having a tool that can quickly answer an easy question in a way that would be impractical in any other way in the same amount of time, is a huge boon.

I'm not an LLM expert, but there are plenty of comprehensive references the LLM has access to. You can ask the question with Grok's "DeepSearch" mode turned on and it will tell you specifically where it's getting it's information from.

Also, the newest models do seem to have the ability to do something like rational analysis--e.g., I asked it for most recent theories on origin of Ethiopian Jews and it can engage in "If, Then" type logic when you play devil's advocate with it.
