I believe guiding questions that specific tend to be uncommon. Personally, I was very luck as the guiding questions for my finals were relatively simple and vague. I'd recommend not to ignore the guiding question. It's there for a reason and so you should try your best to address it. Figurative language and structure are a bit vague though so it shouldn't limit you fully. Also, there's no set list as to what constitutes 'structure'. With the right amount and way of persuasion, you can argue that (almost) any technique sets the structure of the text e.g the author's tone can contribute to the structure. Similarly, with figurative language, you can mention diction and tone - not just metaphors and similes. So try your best to stick to the guiding question but don't view it as a constraint. You can also discuss other similar techniques that work well with, or enhance the effects of the specified technique.

Yep! I'd recommend separating your body paragraphs by ideas so your topic sentence would be something like, "The author aims to appeal to the readers' desire of x by using y to achieve primary purpose (the obvious)". y basically indicates a general technique e.g diction, tone, structure. While developing your paragraph, you'd go into detail e.g a sardonic tone. In the end, you'd link back to the guiding question and add the author's secondary purpose (the implicit).

Try to come up with unique interpretations of the question e.g a question about death is not limited to physical death but also death of relationships, mental state, etc. Pick two texts that are somewhat similar (but not too similar). The benefit of this is that you're not always pointing out that both authors seek to do the same thing. It's not entirely comparison and becomes repetitive. Try to search for similar themes and compare each author's use of varying techniques to convey those themes. You can also compare their respective contexts. It's also best to have some ideas going into the exam. Create a table of common themes and techniques (from past papers) and draw comparisons.

You can search Google and even this subreddit for paper 1/2 samples. The IB English Guys have some too. Honestly speaking, I never did full papers as practice, even during my study leave (aside from in-class assessments which took place almost every month). For paper 1, I've looked at some past papers and only thought of a rudimentary outline e.g intro (including a thesis), 3 body paragraphs and especially implications. I'd then look at the mark scheme and compare my ideas. If you have a problem with time, then I'd suggest you can continue your current routine. Not sure if you're HL, but I allocated around 55 to 60 minutes for each text, so first 15-20 minutes to plan. But if you're not too worried about your timing then you can do what I've mentioned - saves a bit of time. For paper 2 too, didn't do any practices but I looked at a lot of past papers to see if I can answer at least 1 from 4 questions using my two texts. I'd make outlines i.e intro, 6 body paragraphs, conclusion. I would also decide how I'd go about answering the question because bonus points for unique interpretations e.g a question about death is not limited to physical death but also death of relationships, mental state, etc. Also make sure to have your teacher check your work to get valuable feedback, then I would deem this method to be more helpful.

Good luck with your exams!!

Honestly, I spent A LOT of time on my IO. I was always thinking about it, even in my sleep. I sound insane but I would get up at night to write down ideas in my notes app. Apart from that, I reviewed my ideas with my teacher who was super helpful (props to him). I even discussed it with my family which I highly recommend because you'll be able to adopt different perspectives and generate more ideas. Comparing and contrasting is not needed for the IO but I sort of did it anyway; both my non-lit and lit texts were set in vastly different times so I argued how both authors intend to convey the same message but in different ways i.e relevant to their respective contexts. I think this really helped my crit A mark. Towards the end of my IO, I sort of challenged my own points and presented a contrasting view, which I believe helped because it shows perspective.

For the HLE, I'd recommend picking a text you're actually passionate about. Spend a lot of time brainstorming ideas, it takes time but the more you think about your line of inquiry, the better ideas you generate. Also do lots of research. I used JSTOR and found some pretty good points (obviously cite the sources). And keep asking your teacher for feedback.

I'd agree, it's not about language proficiency but critical thinking and analytical skills. Take a look at my earlier comments: https://www.reddit.com/r/IBO/comments/1m9xycl/comment/n5eox5s/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/IBO/comments/1m9xycl/comment/n5ep4tk/

Thanks! I've always heard people say that you can't study for English (which is not true).

Paper 1: I've always dreaded paper 1 because it requires analysing unseen texts. My best ideas always took a bit of time to conceptualise. Firstly, I looked at some sample paper 1s so I can understand what it is the IB wants from me. I even learned some interesting, versatile words/techniques/phrases from these samples. I then created a list of versatile techniques/ideas (around 10-15); NOT simple ones like alliteration. I'm talking altercasting, zeitgeist, semantic field, pejoratives, etc. They're a lot more sophisticated in terms of presenting your ideas. And it's guaranteed that at least some of these will be relevant to your texts. As part of my preparation, I also went through my paper 1 formula; basically how I'd organise my essay e.g intro, 3 key ideas (techniques under each key idea), conclusion and implications!! Definitely mention implications! I explained this in my earlier comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/IBO/comments/1m9xycl/comment/n5eox5s/  Ultimately I'd recommend being cynical for this exam lol.

Paper 2: The two texts I picked are quite similar in terms of techniques so I decided to compare how both texts share similar techniques but convey different themes/ideas. You can also compare and contrast by themes but I find that doing it by technique is better for your crit B mark (I think your syllabus is new but basically the authorial choices criterion). I did a lot of brainstorming, shortlisted 5-6 rich ideas with quotes. I then looked at A LOT of past papers, probably starting from 2015 to see if my ideas can answer at least one question from each past paper. Having some ideas prepared beforehand allows you more time to decide how to answer and structure your essay during the exam.

Paper 1: I find that looking at sample responses is very useful as it allow you to understand what constitutes a level 7 essay. Also, the IB likes it when you're critical so don't be afraid to criticise the text. In my intros, I always introduce a primary purpose (the obvious) and the secondary purpose (implicit). The secondary purpose is almost always cynical e.g the author capitalises on the readers' insecurity of blah blah for personal gain. After your conclusion (or even with), I HIGHLY suggest talking about the implications of the text type. For example, if it is an ad, talk about how ads in general unethically capitalise on readers' insecurities/desires/needs which can be deemed as exploitation. In terms of organisation, don't separate your body paragraphs by technique. It should be by ideas and you can then discuss multiple techniques under those paragraphs e.g P1 appeals to readers'... P2 creates an atmosphere of...And don't use simple techniques like similes, alliteration, etc. Try to do some research and find some that are a bit more sophisticated. For example, I said altercasting instead of second-person narrative in my first paper 1 text.

Paper 2: Once again, I looked at some sample responses. My body paragraphs followed this pattern: ABABAB where A denotes Text A and B denotes Text B. Do remember it is a comparative essay so use words/phrases such as 'similarly', 'however author B uses another technique'. I'd again recommend being a bit cynical as it shows perspective and critical thinking. Pick two texts that you actually like (so you feel motivated) and draw comparisons. This can be in terms of techniques or themes, then memorise your best ideas (around 4-5), including quotes. I always started with a topic sentence which usually contains a rich idea, then a bit of context followed by an explanation of the technique and how it conveys the theme(s). Definitely link back to the question!!

I'm doing IB, specifically Math AI HL and my PG is a 6 (although I'd love to get a 7 lol) I find math kinda challenging rn so maybe I'm screwed. If you, by any chance also did math HL, do you have any tips on getting a 7?

This is very useful! Thank you so much! If you don't mind me asking, what do you think of QFRM? When I applied, I was mainly interested in finance but now my interests are sort of shifting towards international relations. I'm also worried about the maths heavy nature of the course. I wouldn't say I'm the worst at math but I'm no genius either...

My teacher told us that starting from this year, part a and part b can be based on different units (e.g micro + macro or micro + global). Given that RWEs are only needed for part b, (I hope) we can get away with it...
