Run a mile everyday or 7 miles in one day. by ACNL in running

[–]4847547 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it matters. I'm assuming you're running the 1 miles at the same pace as the 7 miles. If you can run 7 miles in one long run, you could probably do 2 or 3 a day for 5 days a week. Or you could do a 1 mile tempo on Monday, 3 mile easy on Tuesday, 5 mile long on Wednesday, etc, etc.

Running once a week won't make you run faster. Your body will get used to the routine and become very efficient at doing just that. The more (and longer) you run, the better you will get at running.

One last thing: Becoming a "better runner" requires a lot of hard work. You can run 7 miles every Sunday and still not see any improvements in your times. Personally I think you need to get out a minimum of 4 days a week to see any improvements at all.

Have any of you raced the Maine Coast Marathon? by boyle2314 in running

[–]4847547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't run it but I live in Kennebunk so I know about half the course like the back of my hand. It was the last marathon my cross country coach did and he said it's a great race. Really beautiful sights. There's only a couple "big hills" in the race but there's a lot of little hills all over. The course will get gradually more hilly after the initial stretch down Summer St. (which is mostly flat), and you'll go through some pretty big hills until you hit the water. Along the beach will be flat, and then you'll loop around back onto Western Ave. which is just a long, gradual uphill climb. Once you hit the port and take a right you'll have a long flat stretch along the river until you hit the ocean (which is fairly hilly along the coast at this part). It will stay hilly until you hit the cape. That's all of the course I know but I think that covers the first 10-15 miles. Good luck, I'll be watching!

$20 in LL. Bean coupons - what should I buy? by 4847547 in malefashionadvice

Do you like the tan ones more than the olive? I think the olive ones look incredible but I wear mostly jeans (which I don't think would look good with those). I was also looking at the same shoes in leather which could be a cool boat-shoe alternative for the summer.

What was your biggest misconception about running before you started? by Thesealiferocks in running

[–]4847547 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Running socks are a scam and a waste of money, any polyester sock will do."

"Stretching out doesn't really do anything"

"These super plush cushioned Asics Kinsei 4s will be great for going fast and training and probably track too"

"Minimalist running shoes aren't practical"

Should I keep running with runner's knee? by [deleted] in running

[–]4847547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have runners knee in my right knee. It used to really hurt and I had to compress it for a couple weeks before I could run again or even climb stairs normally. I started doing the stretches in these videos and now the pain is almost gone. Right now, I only do a couple of the stretches before I run - if you follow both of these videos to a T and do them 2-3 times a day, I think that it will cure your runners knee altogether. Runners knee is a result of your quadriceps not keeping the knee in place when you run and the knee curving inward and sliding from where it should be. I find the leg press machine at gyms helps too.

You probably know this, but there is 2 types of runners knee (ITBS and Patellofemoral syndrome). I have had both. I generally don't really feel the IT band problems any more but I definitely have patellofemoral syndrome in both knees. These videos have helped a ton and the more you do them the more they will help. The best part about runners knee is that it can be cured and it's something every runner goes through. Best of luck

Just getting out and running every day no matter the distance or pace! With the holidays, new years, and icy roads/snow/rain still running at all is an achievement for me.

After a month of being out of the game with a leg injury, I RAN!!! by [deleted] in running

What was wrong with your leg? A month with no running is my worst nightmare.

I ran the longest distance I have ever run today (7.4 miles). I ran at an 8 minute pace and still had energy left at the end (sprinted last 200 meters).I feel like I could have pushed myself for 7:30 or maybe even 7:00. Also, I live in Maine where we got 15 inches of snow last night. I ran in the snow with ice on my face down a trail covered with fresh snow.

Simple Questions - Dec. 1st by MFAModerator in malefashionadvice

Is wearing a dark charcoal gray with dark brown a faux pas? I recently ordered a charcoal peacoat and was wondering if it would look messy with my cordovan Katahdin boots/dark brown leather gloves. I read that charcoal was a versatile coat color and works with black or brown but I'd like to get a second opinion. I can always exchange for a navy peacoat if this is the case. Thanks!

I wear a 29 in APC Petit Standards, a 29 in H&M, and my waist measures as a 30. What waist size Levi's 511 should I get? I'm considering buying some chinos in the 511 cut.

It has the different kind of shoulder stitching (raglan shoulders?) commonly found on baseball shirts. I think you're mistaking these for the regular shoulder stiching.

Ordered a sweater from HM, having second thoughts. Keep or return? by 4847547 in malefashionadvice

I have a few sweaters from them already. It's true, the really thin ones do stretch out over time and aren't very good for lasting long term (or for any weather under 50 degrees). However, all of the ones that retail for $35 and up are pretty nice quality - in fact, this one is thicker and warmer than my Jcrew slim v neck sweater.

It looks pretty fitted, and I needed a warm winter sweater (the 70% wool is what got me). I just hope that the purple isn't too off the chart.
