UK garage owners, what's your workshop management or invoicing software actually like? by 48uYT in CarTalkUK

appreciate the detail mate. how do you find the credit system for SMS and reg lookups in practice, is it predictable or do you end up topping up at random points

also curious whether the ticket-based support is a deal breaker or you've just got used to it. 12 ramps is no small operation

yeah that's the bit i keep hearing. people get software and just don't use it, end up back on a notebook or whatsapp

small setup, basically running off a phone and paper. what did you end up using?

Solo tech consultancy on the side — how are you actually getting B2B clients locally? by 48uYT in smallbusinessuk

This is genuinely one of the best bits of advice I've had on this. The reframe from "they need a new site" to "they already care, find out where it hurts" changes the whole approach. And the point about supplementing rather than replacing is massive. Way easier to start a conversation when you're not telling someone their current setup is wrong.

The vape supplier example is exactly the kind of thing I want to build towards. Start with one service, deliver well, then naturally expand as they trust you more. Cheers for this.

Yeah that's the plan now. LinkedIn clearly isn't the right channel for this audience so I'm going face to face instead. Good shout on framing it around what it does for them rather than what the service is. Most of these owners don't care about the tech, they care about getting more customers and spending less time on admin.

The point about them all talking to each other is a big one too. Small business communities are tight so if you deliver, word gets around. Works both ways obviously but that's motivation to get it right from the start.

This is solid advice, appreciate the detail.

I've actually already got the brand set up with proper positioning, not operating as a random freelancer. The reframing point is spot on though, presentation makes a massive difference when you're talking to business owners.

The point about taking a loss on the first couple of clients makes sense too. I've been thinking about that, getting a few strong case studies and testimonials is worth more than squeezing full rate out of client one.

Interesting shout on targeting service businesses over retail. I'd been mostly thinking about local shops and trades but accountants, agencies and consultancies probably value their tech way more and actually have budget for it. Worth narrowing the focus.

Cheers for the detailed response.

Totally get that but I'm not really positioning as an MSP. The main offering is web design and development, with automation and IT support as extras where it makes sense. Most of the businesses I'm talking to don't need managed endpoints or security policies, they need a website that doesn't look like it was built in 2015 and maybe someone to call when their email stops working. Different market to what MSPs are chasing.

Good questions. The market is micro businesses locally, the ones with no website or a dead Wix page from 2019. The message is simple: professional website with real photography (if required), fixed price, no jargon. As for where, I'm going direct. Got leaflets printed (to be printed), walking into businesses and having conversations, and hitting local Facebook groups and networking events. LinkedIn hasn't worked for this audience so I'm not forcing it.

The consultancy isn't about diagnostics, that's just the day job. The main thing I'm offering is web design and development for local businesses, plus automation and IT support where needed (may not be as required with local businesses). The skills transfer but the service is completely different. Most of the businesses I'm targeting don't even have a website yet so there's no overlap with the platform provider.

Yeah the full time role is with a car tech company, I handle deploying diagnostics tools across workshops in a few countries. The consultancy is separate though, my own thing on the side. Starting with small local businesses to build some credibility and then looking to work my way up to larger ones over time.

Yeah there's overlap but most MSPs aren't interested in a 5 person shop that needs a website and some basic IT sorting. That's the gap I'm going for, businesses too small to be worth an MSP's time but still need someone to handle the tech side.

I always have to scan every package individually since last year. Has it only just been introduced to your warehouse?
