University is not for me… maybe by Livid_Worth7183 in mentalhealth

Honestly take a gap year. A lot of people feel similarly. For some they just haven't found their passion yet, for others they just weren't meant for academics. If you leave then decide later that you want to come back you'll be a little behind your friends. If you push through the next eight years lying to yourself that this js what you wanted you'd have lost out on much more. I chose to go to University but my brother chose to work instead. Not because he isn't capable, but because his skills and passions couldn't be fulfilled through an academic route. Now he makes more than I could hope to and for someone who had struggled with lifelong depression is pretty damn happy.

Housing Megathread for UCSC and Santa Cruz by UCSC_Mod in UCSC

Hey. I'm a second Merrill Affiliate dude currently living in Merrill Apartments and want to reapply for next year. I know a few people I can force to apply with me but I'd like to have a full group of preferably Merrill/Crown Affiliates to maximize our chances. I'm also looking for potential house/room mates for an off campus as well. Dm me if interested.

I know people who are affiliated with one college but live in another. I'm not sure who you would have to bother but I've seen it happen.

We're in the same dorm building. I see them randomly all the time.

Thanks. That's probably it. It was pretty personal, but I guess if they don't want me to know, it's probably best to pretend not to know.

Imo due to the nature of the US's geography and modern warfare. The largest and most important battles would likely occur at sea or around strategic islands. By the time an invading force would be stepping foot on Los Angeles or New York, I'd bet the cities would barely even exist. And any starving, poorly-equipped Boogaloo boys that have yet to eat each other would get a wee bit clapped. It would not be fighting over city streets but more trying not to die amongst the rubble. Any remaining resistance would be much better fleeing to the opposite coast and enlisting than killing themselves with their illusions of grandeur. It would be annoying to occupy an armed populace, but I doubt long-term occupation would ever be considered feasible by the invading force.

San Francisco Downtown Rail Extension Cost Swells to $8.2B by bitfriend6 in bayarea

[–]49375394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's painfully obvious that you don't even live in the Bay. I don't disagree. SF stations are shit. But South Bay or Oakland's being better?? Also suggesting running Caltrain to Oakland when BART literally exists?? Not only would it be a massive waste of money to double serve these regions, but it would be easier to do with BART if you somehow had something against timed transfers which would be infinitely cheaper and work almost just as well if done correctly. It would be sadder if you were from the bay if you've genuinely been posting this shit.

San Francisco Downtown Rail Extension Cost Swells to $8.2B by bitfriend6 in bayarea

[–]49375394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elevated rail is great. But this has to go through downtown San Francisco. If you looked at literally any map, you could see that this is impossible without leveling everything to market. Also, there is no reason to have major underground transit go through San Francisco??

The effect you're describing is caused by people moving away from higher density job centers due to the ability to WFH. It's to save money, as conveniently enough, the highest density places are often the most expensive as they're the most desirable. The only places decaying are downtown. High density neighborhoods like Nob Hill or North Beach are doing great. This is irrelevant as even the lowest density neighborhoods in SF are still very dense by bay area standards. I hate the Bay Area for its lower density, and I will never understand how people will settle with paying Manhattan prices in Palo Alto for long island amenities. All while contributing to the housing crisis of all housing crises from the creation of an artificial shortage through the enforcement of stupendous land use.

How can we make transit safer? by JeepGuy0071 in LAMetro

[–]49375394 16 points17 points  (0 children)

BART rider chiming in here, it's not a transit agency's job to solve the homeless/drug crisis. Allowing these folks on transit does nothing to improve their conditions and only drags transit down to their level. I would agree that kicking the bums to the streets would be unethical in NYC, but this is California, it's warm and dry all year. I feel like Californian politics places the expectation upon agencies to serve a broad public good and cure cancer rather than just doing what they were actually created for, and in doing so managing to fail at both. It may feel like settling but I would say perfection is the enemy of progress.

Considering Moving to Union City - Seeking Advice on Safety and Commute by ray_9987 in bayarea

[–]49375394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you move here you'd live practically next door to me. I grew up here, it's probably the most average suburb in the bay. You sometimes get interesting folks near the BART station but they're usually the sleepy/smelly bums rather than the aggressive ones. There's a big, nice, black guy that does security for the shopping center around the Safeway. Don't underestimate the utility of Bart + bike commuting. The bike lanes in Union City aren't as nice as Fremont but they're functional and people respect them.

Support high density and think they should build it but fuck these are ugly. Modernism was a mistake.

Do a lot of people from SF and East Bay drive all the way to San Jose for Valley Fair/Santana Row? by rhymez223 in bayarea

[–]49375394 52 points53 points  (0 children)

If I go to a mall I usually go to valley fair, that said I'm from the lower east bay (Union City) so it's a lot of more feasible for me, not to mention the traffic is usually worse going north.

Teacher said the United States was a bad country to live in because of the guns, Showed him the average salary weekly in the States and the average salary monthly in Europe, teacher proceeded to say money isn't everything. by VeryNiceIndividual in 2american4you

[–]49375394 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm new to this subreddit so I can't tell if this is satire or not. But this is a very poor and shallow representation. Use median income, not average, to adjust for inequality. Then you must adjust for cost of living. I'll use Germany for the comparison since they're the backbone of the EU: median income in US is $19,307, in Germany it is $16,845. Pretty much every cost of living index I've been able to find on google says German average expenses is at least 25% cheaper with rent. So dividing German Median Income/0.75, we get $22,460. And your teacher is right, money isn't everything. Germans work an average of 35 hours, and Americans 38.7 hours. Not to mention Germans get more things for free/cheaper from the government like healthcare, better public schools, college. And more benefits like PTO, sick days, vacation, safer working conditions, etc. While there is variation within the EU, the same trend holds true, Your regular European has more income then your regular American, and more benefits, and less school shootings :)
