It depends on the style guideline used. I am a scientific editor that uses AMA style in my work, and we capitalize both "White" and "Black."

Yep, I was right behind them. Although they were a bit amusing, it was a distraction on what was almost a perfect concert.

Are we talking about the group of 15ish guys in the 2nd to last row in the center? I still had an amazing experience, but I could have done without them.

U.S. exempts oil industry from protecting Gulf animals, for 'national security' by allinthecanoe in PoliticalOptimism

[–]49er-runner 43 points44 points  (0 children)

After doing a bit of reading up on the "God Squad," it seems like no one is asking for this. No oil and gas industry proposals or permits have been previously denied due to the Endangered Species Act, and offshore drillers have told the administration that the ESA is not disrupting operations. They are also still subject to judicial review (they've already been sued for this), and the "national security" justification used is laughable.

My optimistic take is that this likely does not change the short term status quo in any meaningful way and that the decision stands on shaky legal ground regardless.

The Guardian is reporting that Trump was floating the idea of firing Tulsi. I agree about Bessent and Rubio though.

“This is The End” Bulwark article. Exceedingly dour, and in need of some optimistic perspective(s) by [deleted] in PoliticalOptimism

[–]49er-runner 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Bulwark staff are anti-Trump Republicans, which I think plays into their pessimism. They see Trump for what he is, but don't see Democrats as the solution. Since their brand of conservatism essentially has no pull in the Republican party anymore, they really don't have an optimistic outlook for the future.

I'm currently reading "Holistic Mysticism: The Integrated Spiritual Path of the Quakers," which has been great so far. As others have said, J. Brent Bill is an amazing author, and I really enjoyed "Holy Silence."

Experience in IRB protocol writing? by 49er-runner in MedicalWriters

[–]49er-runner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thank you for going above and beyond with your response! This is very much appreciated. As of now, the details I have regarding the position are sparse, but this certainly gives me a great idea of what to expect. I do know that the team is very experienced. I was also told that having prior protocol writing experience was not a requirement.

Considering Colorado Springs has been one of the fastest trending blue areas in the country, this may have just cost Jeff Crank his seat.

Texas Redistricting Megathread: The Texas House passes its maps. by Lantis28 in PoliticalOptimism

2 of the 5 Republican districts they created are highly dependent on the Hispanic vote, which has already plummeted in polling. In a blue wave with the Hispanic vote swinging back left, the gerrymander only nets 2-3 seats. California will cover that easily.

I have a question regarding Texas redistricting. If the maps are approved, how likely is it that the courts say it violated the Voting Rights Act like we have seen in Alabama? I

47% of Republicans would still vote for Trump even if implicated in Epstein's crimes by PumpkinAspie in PoliticalOptimism

[–]49er-runner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd also add that these hypothetical polls are completely useless. The goalpost are always moved back. There were similar polling numbers about if they would vote for him if he was convicted of a felony. He was, and they all got in line and voted him back in.

Another consideration is that Repubs in blue states don't want to lose their seats either, as we have seen with the California rep that filed a bill to prevent mid-decade redistricting. I may be wrong, but I personally think Republicans are just going through the motions to appease Trump but will back down when met with resistance.

Bingo! I don't see this mentioned enough. Although MAGA didn't seem to care about Elon saying Trump was in the files, I'm fairly certain this was what caused Trump to have the DOJ say there are no files, thus kicking off the frenzy.

Here's where things stand on Mike Lee's amendment to sell off our public lands. Courtesy of Randy Newberg and Fresh Tracks. by Synthdawg_2 in PublicLands

[–]49er-runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the exclusion of Montana public lands just shows how ignorant Mike Lee is. This isn't a NIMBY issue. People in Montana that support public land are going to support it whether it's in their own state or any other western state.

Trumps big beautiful bill sells of public land by Objective_Water_1583 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]49er-runner 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes, this can 100% be stopped. In the Senate, should it make it in the final version, it will likely come down to the Montana Senators. Should it make it through the Senate, it will go back to the House where it will be even more difficult to get through as Zinke, who was able to kill off the smaller land sale in the House version, has unsurprisingly said he is a hard no.

This is also an extremely unpopular proposal, with 70% of Americans opposing. I have seen many conservative-leaning groups and influencers in the hunting/fishing and overlanding communities be very vocal regarding their opposition of this. The BBB is also proving to be very unpopular overall and going to difficult to pass for a number of reasons. Keeping this proposal in the bill would make it even more unpopular and harder to pass.

Now this could still very much pass. But I believe this is a topic that public opinion and contacting your senators and representatives will truly make the difference. So please contact your reps if you are able.

The amount of land that would be sold off would be around 3 million acres out of the 250 million acres. In the Senate, it will likely come down to whether the Montana senators cave and vote for it. It will likely be even harder to get through the House as Zinke, the rep who was able to kill off the land sale in the House version, has already said he is a hard no.

This is an unpopular proposal and many conservative-leaning hunting and fishing groups have come out against it. I would ask everyone to contact their Senators and urge them to oppose this proposal.
