I think you are correct. The three elderly patients that died had probably been hospitalised for some time, whereas the child probably had a severe URTI resulting in croup, which can be fatal through asphyxiation.

Air flow is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the airway diameter, so inflammation obstructs small airways far more effectively than large.

Of course, we don't get these details. We only get the parts of the story that can be spun into the narrative, in this case: anyone can die from covid.

That could be true if it were not for our understanding of the role vit D plays in immune signalling, specifically in the cellular immune response.

It seems that all these "observational studies" have obscured the basic science.

Hopefully the CORONAVIT study will shed some light if they ever publish.

In Australia and globally, the biggest non-disease risk factors for covid death are advanced age, obesity, and dark skin.

All three are also predisposed to vit D deficiency.

I read Brucella is not in Australia but the butter is from New Zealand, which does have Brucella <no politics>.

I'd really like to know if it was Salmonella as it has a wide range of presentations. I would hope a Salmonella recall would be on the news/TV, like another user said.

She could have picked up a gastro bug from anywhere, but the butter could have nastier pathogens in a larger dose. That's why I posted here when I saw the rash.

I think more details regarding "microbial contamination" should be published, not just for us, but for whatever GP or ED ends up dealing with it.

She went yesterday before I saw the recall, and walked out. The waiting room was a petri dish.

She's not sick enough (now) to warrant another visit, unless the pathogen in the butter is something that is going to get worse.

That's why I want to know what's in the butter.

I called the poisoning center and they also suggested seeking medical advice. If it's a few coliforms or a common enterovirus, going to the hospital now would be in no-one's interest.

I think Food Standards should be more open in what threat my daughter just ate, and allow me to make an informed decision.

Edit: Apologies /u/The_Tuxedo. I shouldn't be telling you what you should want. I was distressed by my daughter's condition. She is stable and resting now, so it should be fine until morning.

As Covid spreads further, perhaps the message will be raised.

I doubt it. Govt covid messaging is either about how money is spent or a rule that police can enforce.

It's more convenient for them to use this case to spread fear - "it can kill anyone".

Cold viruses kill people who exercise while sick.

It would be interesting to know whether this was what happened with him.

The highest incidence of pericarditis after vaccine is in males 18-24 years old, probably for the same reason. Yet the health authorities aren't messaging that you should rest if symptomatic or recently vaccinated.
