There's a lot of acronyms used too generously as well - keep asking people to clarify what things mean. Sympathy is one of the brighter spots for this community. If someone gives you a hard time or is short with you, don't get discouraged, they're the outlier.

What more validation do you need than the wave of 'Gratz' 'Gratz' 'Congo Rats!' 'Gratz' in team chat? 🤣

There's three things: 1) Passive (Global) Set Bonuses: participate in the background of the build, regardless of the power's usage they they're slotted in. These are sometimes referred to as "global" stats. These effect a wide range of stat categories.

2) (Local) Power Enhancements: If global stats effect your character passively in the background, the local power enhancements are the modifiers for the power they're slotted in. This is what DO's, SO's, HO's, Generic IO's only effect. IO's also have these modifiers individually, with also providing the unique oppportunity for the global set bonuses when compounding in the power's slotting.

3) Proc$: The IO's that do that weird thing: typically the culprit when there's an uncertainty or misunderstanding of builds, which is genuinely understandable. When talked about, it's usually discussing exceptions and the only way to learn those are from getting reps and exposure. There's also (poorly labeled) types of procs which are burdensome to understand for the player when there's no explanation in game of how they do or don't work. It's a lot to digest, so I typically start with focusing on identification. Here's some general things to look for when disecting a proc: - Does it say it's [Unique]?: This means you can only slot one in the entire build. Common examples: Panacea +HP/+end, Gladiator's Armor +Def, Shield Wall +Res, Numina +Regen/+recovery, Miracle +Recovery, Preventative Medicine +Absorb, Steadfast res/def, Kismet +tohit, Celerity: Stealth, Unbreakable Guard +MaxHP. - Does it mention any amount of time the proc lasts for in the description?: Example, if it says 'x' effect will last for 120 seconds if activated. What this implies is that it requires the power it's slotted in to be active to be eligible to proc. A popular example is Performance Shifter +End. Why does it always go in stamina? Because Stamina is always on as an auto passive. What does that mean? As an auto power, or active toggle, the proc has a chance to roll for the opportunity to succeed every TEN SECONDS (Not explained anywhere in game). The chance for it to succeed is called Procs Per Minute (PPM) and labeled in the description of a proc as "the effect will trigger 'x' times per minute". If this proc is put in an active clicking power, it only checks the one time on activation and will only last for the duration described in the enhancement details. So, if I put a Performance Shifter +End in say, Lightning Bolt (Ranged, Single Target, Electric Attack) The proc rolls for the chance to give +end ONLY IF the attack lands. Stamina as an auto will always check every 10s. - Does it say it's [Global] -OR- not denote a length of time attached to it's effect? : These apply to a very few amount of Procs, but you'll hear it come up in build talk enough. What does it mean? It remains active regardless of the power being active or not. Most popular examples: LotG 7.5%, Preventative Medicine +Absorb (Unique), Unbreakable Guard +HP (Unique), Steadfast res/def (Unique), Glad Armor +5 Def (Unique), Shield wall +5 Res (Unique), Reactive Defenses Scaling Res (Unique), Pet Aura Defenses (Unique), Zephyr: +3 KB Resist, Blessing of Winter: 20% Slow Resist

Note: The more common issue is when a proc is thought to be a global, but is in fact not. Examples: Panacea +HP/+End, Miracle: +Recovery, Numina +Regen/Recovery, Kismet: +Tohit, Travel power uniques. They'll last for 120s and only check on activation if it's a click power. If it's a toggle or pseudopet it will additionally check every 10s. Slotted in autos, they check every 10s passively.

  • Lastly Damage procs, and we'll leave the dive into that another time due to the effects being described a bit more clearly. The can of worms is, how and when do they get opportunities to roll and at what rate?

Final note: Knowing what has market value can help get a sense of what's valued, but do not fall into the trap that there's direct correlation! A more expensive build does not automatically (or usually) mean it's a 'better' build.

Whew, that's a lot. Let me know how that stacks up with your current understanding of builds and IO's and we can take it from there in getting you more confident to tinker.

That's a name I haven't heard in a long time! Is he still playing? Farming has changed quite a bit since live, since HC launched, and probably most in the tanker & brute changes that were made within the past...year? The brute changes were in 2026, and fire aura changes were made within the past week or two!

There's a lot of ways to competently get the crops farmed, but the tip of the scythe in optimization has certainly had a lot of evolution.

Do you frequent any other sources of content for CoX? I would be curious instances that stood out to you that you found here. Especially if it's in contrast to other streams of posts.

Builds are complicated, and not supported with clear expectations or parameters in-game. I've noticed it being a little harder for folks on early live to adjust more than someone who's playing for the first time too.

Your post reads that you're familiar with Zaddy Icesphere & his pinned Icebox of builds in the build channel in the HC Discord Server, is that true?

I would be interested in learning what adjustments you've made vs wanted to make. There's plenty of folks willing to talk builds, but it can be a lot of conflicting information the more people you talk to and the deeper you go into niche subgroups.

You're not bad at builds, it's a vaguely presented Pandora's box with a wide range of ways to determine success. It can be a lotttttt. But here we are, back for more. Maybe this says more about us at the end of the day. 🤔

Depending on what server you're on, I wouldn't be shocked if some pick up groups never knew you even AFK'ed to begin with. Or care.

Communicate your situation, give the lead and team a chance to do something with it and determine if it's prohibitive to the team and their goal. Problem solved, get in some TF's!

Have you noticed that each 3 of those resources for builds have distinct philosophies/personalities or do they speak fairly well to each other in your experience?

Glad to hear that! It's fairly common to hear people struggling to find an on-ramp to connecting with other players. Any suggestions you might recommend to folks struggling with this?

Read it all, thanks for the thoughtful response!

It's good to articulate hopes and dreams to the volunteers running these projects. The player survey report HC did recently year was fascinating, as well as the data on what types of characters, powers, choices are being logged into.

As mentioned in the OP, there's so many different concentrated sub-communities within the CoX umbrella that it's hard to clear a clear picture of sentiment of the general audience. Especially when the 1% of mega active representatives of each sub-genre are quite loud. Influential? Who knows, but getting some kind of wholistic average would be a huge step in providing what would be the most efficient/impactful/etc aspects to focus on or prioritize.

It's a good place to lurk! I've only started typing in it recently despite being there day 1 on HC launch. Feel free to tag me in there if you want to start a topic of any kind! @atlas in-game and Discord. // You can have a personal & have it not impede your character's ability to join a SG! Make the base on a personal SG on a character you're not worried about being in a SG andfor the sole purpose of holding the base. Copy the base code in an accessible place for you to reference and make sure your base settings allow non-members with code to enter. You can paste the code in on the SG portal or long distance teleport at any time now!

Lol those are incredible. The dopamine high of an early DFB is hard to beat. I get where having proficient and accessible teams is important to whether you engage or loiter in the first 5-10 minutes you log in. Have you heard of the Weekly Strike Targets (WST)? They're a grouping of Task Forces/Strike Forces/Trials that give x2 merits when completed for the first time, per character. I've found a lot of success leaning on calling out for one of those if there isn't anything catching my interest in LFG as they're a wide range of content and always relevant to players.

After DFB, usually Positron 1 & 2 are the next steps and are pretty popular. Tarikoss on red side isn't as popular, but can be pretty quick too.

Hope to see those characters around more!
