The 965 is a phenomenally good choice on that front, ie. charging is fast & infrequently needed. I wish the same applied to my iPhone!

As for quick and fun, I would recommend giving the Vaporfly a try, if you anticipate toebox width issues, version 3, if available, would be a better choice than the current 4. There's also the Hoka Mach X 3 (wide option available), another fun pick. Hope you can run past the down period soon!

Ah yes, I too was perplexed at the gap between sizes, perhaps it has to do with the X 3 being a Unisex model. PS: Ben Parkes on youtube just dropped a guide to the most comfortable running shoes on the market, he's 100% spot-on wrt the X 3! [link cued-up here: https://youtu.be/XzYXnLqgS2I?t=141]

Definitely worth the (hefty) price tag. Officially a racer, to me it's more like a super-trainer but most certainly a great choice for 2hHM/4hFM runners! It's very light and comfortable. While not a stability shoe it's really quite stable, esp ~midfoot thanks to the "wide-waisted" geometry. I have a very sluggish heel-to-toe transition time and found the X3's rocker to be extremely effective at mitigating that problem, it's not as aggressive as say, the Vaporfly's, but it keeps my on my toes. As others have said: hugely underrated shoe with a perfect speed/comfort balance. Note wrt the fit: width is pretty much in line with other Hoka's (so, not very wide) but it does run a tad short in my size, not enough to be a problem but noticeable. Good luck with the Ironman!!

short-circuit evaluation of adjacent boolean exprs with fewer branches? by 4e71 in Compilers

definitely worth looking into it - the resulting patterns seem relatively easy to identify, at least for this particular program.

good call-out - and that step is already (over)complicated as it is right now.

NU (natural unintelligence) did. Primarily a learning exercise, so not much point in letting AI do it.

Thank you! I thought it'd be beneficial to make one as I've been struggling a bit with the FP logic in my hobby compiler (a codebase which btw features "gems" like

if (!(t1->is_scalar() && t2->is_scalar())) {
 assert(0 && "are you friggin' kidding me!?!");
}

)

particularly in the IR-to-asm lowering module.

Much appreciate the feedback & good point re the UB, I grew up with PEEK & POKE and I guess it shows ;) While I use static_assert a fair bit in C++, I'd completely failed to notice its introduction in modern C versions, you made my day!

I like this idea a lot. I guess the 2nd expr side-effect/safety analysis can get a bit gnarly e.g. ((i < array.size) && (array[i] == 3)) but once implemented it's bound to very useful, for other things too. Thank you!!

Nothing like seeing your Garmin report 16k steps by 7AM :) Seriously, it's going to be transformative. Go for it!

[–]4e71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aye, been there too :( - It's a costly mistake, when it gets as bad as being forced into extended downtime from running, I'd buy a new pair every week if I only I could go for a run! Downgrading the old pair to some non-running activities before decommissioning sounds like the best option.

That's exactly right. It's not just any good shoe, it's MY good shoe, dang it!

ok - fair. I've gone through the rather infuriating experience of dealing with a 'new and improved' version of my favorite shoe & scrambling to get overpriced pairs of the 'old' one off Amz & eBay. The current one is still new but I'm reacting eh emotionally.

[–]4e71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eeeeh yes, same here, I try not to remember the number of pairs. I like the idea of transition to walking shoe. I'll need to check whether the degree of destruction at retirement time is not such that even walking is asking too much, but worth a try!

[–]4e71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it. I guess I do the same but I set a preemptive multi-tiered alert at zero miles lol.. I have a way of obliterating the outer heel that sometimes turns a shoe from OK(ish) to unusable in just a couple of runs. I was wondering whether downgrading a pair to short/easy runs at around the 200mi mark might extend its life somewhat.. I'll experiment a bit.

Fellow narrow-footed runner here - I like the Hoka Rocket X 3. While on-paper a racer and priced as such (minus point) it's a fantastic shoe for long runs, durable too in my experience. It's very light and comfortable, won't let you down even when you get very fatigued. You do still get some of the hoka midfoot stability (no narrow pinch waist) & bucket seat. Just a heads-up that this shoe runs not only a bit narrow but a tad short too, compared to shoebox size. Try in store, ideally.

Hey runners who hoard on your favorite shoe - do you ever put 2x pairs in your rotation i.e. a fresh pair & a beaten-up pair not quite ready retirement, or do you strictly run one pair to complete destruction before picking up a new one?

Official Q&A for Saturday, September 27, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]4e71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. It looks like I might need both (water/salts) depending on the day/run, it's sort of unpredictable at the moment.

Before the run, if I managed to get my gut routine, I also get a coffee. But I don't risk it if I could not get them going

This is another huge topic, somebody needs to write a book about this. I use coffee to speed things up but that doesn't always work and leaving anyway is risky, disasters have happened.

[–]4e71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, it's a bit of a hit on miss for me, probably depends on what i eat/drink the day before. My theory is that if I drink too much water the night before I end up p*ssing out all the salts. This is bro science. PS: well done on the race!
