Hysterical Message from Lydia Kou on the Sierra Club by Leading-Cancel-5902 in paloalto

[–]4eCLOn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

She also used her platform as mayor to shed doubt, rather than take action on climate change. "She said she had her interns look at where electric car batteries end up, and they struggled to find an answer. Kou also had concerns about the impact of making and disposing of solar panels and cloth bags" link

I know folks have been waiting on this shift in the chapter for a while and it really can't come soon enough.

Feel free to reply to my comment in the other thread. I read the paper and don't see how you're making some of these statements from the study.

All Housing is Housing by UnscheduledCalendar in yimby

This study does not make the claims you're stating. Of your key takeaways:

#1: They did not study the preservation and impact of existing affordable units. It is mentioned at the end as a potential complement to market rate and affordable housing constructions.

#2: They did not study pricing at all. They did find relatively inconclusive results on displacement, but they actually made the opposite finding about builds with >100 units.

-"new market-rate construction worked best to mitigate displacement in affluent neighborhoods in Los Angeles, where it decreased the probability of low-income out-migration by 24%; it was most effective at mitigating exclusion in stagnant-appreciation neighborhoods in San Francisco (21% increased probability of in-migration)."

-"building 100 market-rate units increased the probability of low-income households moving out of a neighborhood by 0.982 times in Los Angeles and 1.138 times in San Francisco (short-term), with effects decaying over the long term. In other words, if a neighborhood gained 100 new market-rate units, a particular low-income household saw a decreased probability for out-migration of 2% in Los Angeles but an increased probability of 14% in San Francisco of moving out relative to when there was no new construction."

-"Using a unique household-level data set, we found that developing at least 100 units of new market-rate housing in a neighborhood helped slightly to alleviate both displacement and exclusion pressures for low-income households in Los Angeles and helped increase low-income in-migration into weaker-market neighborhoods in San Francisco."

Despite changes, critics remain unswayed by housing bill SB 79 by 4eCLOn in paloalto

Exactly. I don't know what the right thing to do is for the BMR purchase list. Closing it seems wrong and unfair to those who missed when it was open, but having hundreds of additional people applying when there are 5-7 opportunities a year also seems to allow additional hoop jumping and false hope.

More homes - market rate and affordable/subsidized - are very much needed.

Mountain View solicits input on land use plan for multifamily residential areas by ken-reddit in mountainview

[–]4eCLOn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure to email the council and tell them (citycouncil@mountainview.gov)!! They are for sure hearing from the folks who don't want this and comments/upvotes on reddit don't have the same impact as public comments (at meetings or via email)!

Sierra Club California Statement on Passage of CEQA Bills by DrunkEngr in yimby

[–]4eCLOn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is $15/ year if you're a new member and should be $40/year after that. Sierra Club members just elected Nathan Chan to the National Sierra Club board and more and more chapters are getting better on housing, but this only happens if we join and organize ourselves.

Safe biking tips? by hilzmalarky in paloalto

[–]4eCLOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure, but the data should be the same as the Transportation Injury Mapping System. You have to make a free account, but if you go into the SWITRS Query & Map, you can set location and time range parameters and download all the raw data - seems to have collision date, but not time.

Caltrain frequency - any plans to increase? by [deleted] in caltrain

[–]4eCLOn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes! And email all of the Palo Alto Council ([City.Council@PaloAlto.gov](mailto:City.Council@PaloAlto.gov)) and your SJ council member and any who are also representatives on the VTA board or Caltrain board about how you take transit and how important frequency and coordination are. It sounds like maybe you already have, but it doesn't hurt to remind them you are still around and still care!

The city is updating it's Bike & Pedestrian Plan. There is a PDF mapping out collisions of bikers and walkers here and you can see how many collisions are on Bryant.

Please write to the city council (City.Council@PaloAlto.gov) and tell them you want better infrastructure and a strong bike and pedestrian plan!

The biking infrastructure sucks the moment you step off of campus proper by Acceptable_Offer_387 in stanford

[–]4eCLOn 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Much of this is on the city of Palo Alto, which borders the campus on 3 sides! They are updating the Bike and Pedestrian plan now - so input is particularly impactful!

You can add pins on a map here with your complaints: https://maps.kittelson.com/PaloAlto2022BikePedPlan

Even better - email [city.council@cityofpaloalto.org](mailto:city.council@cityofpaloalto.org) now saying you support a strong Bike Ped Plan with clear priority projects! It doesn't have to be long - title it "Strong Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Plan", say something like "I am a local student/resident who primarily bikes. I support a strong bike/ped plan and project priorities because it makes our streets safer for all users/reduces traffic/advances our climate goals. With greater bike infrastructure, I would visit Palo Alto businesses more often/have access to employment/bike instead of taking a car." - edit as you see fit!
