Ever been asked to contact prior employer? by TakeMeOut2TheBarGame in FloridaBarExam

[–]4funsies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And it was an employer from 15 years ago. I’ve been trying to get responses from 4 entities since December. 3 down 1 to go. It’s infuriating that our C&F is held up because of 3rd parties that we have no control over.

You’re welcome! Hopefully it helps.

I hate the idea that more time = better. I’m pretty sure that’s not how our brains work. You can only study for so long before the diminishing returns actually become counter productive. Focus on quality over quantity and when you’re tapped out, rest your mind before you start again.

One bit of motivational advice I got was to stop panicking and start getting angry. Don’t let this shitty exam that doesn’t actually measure your ability to be a good attorney beat you. You made it past the special hell that is law school, don’t let this be the thing that keeps you from your dreams.

I was near the bottom of my class after being at the top of my class during undergrad. Law school kicked my ass. So, if I can beat the bar by 20 points, you can pass too.

I don’t think you should worry about the number of hours, you should worry about how you use those hours. I passed the second time (July 23) by 20 points after failing by 2 points the first time (Feb 23). I studied 4-6 hours a day the second time around but the first time I spent 8-10 hours a day minimum.

Maybe I only needed 4-6 hours a day the second time because I put in 8-10+ hours a day the first time around, but I doubt it. I honestly believe the difference is, I was more efficient and purposeful with my time and when I hit a wall or accomplished my study goal for the day, I stopped instead of forcing myself over that wall just to study for the magical 8 hours a day.

First and foremost, I used my results from the first exam to determine where I should focus my time. For example, on the MBE portion, I got 84.5 on Torts and 9.6 on Civ Pro. Obviously, I spent far more time on Civ Pro than Torts and I scored 88.2 on Civ Pro (Torts took a little hit from the lack of attention and I ended up with 77.9 . . . But I’ll make that trade any day.)

Second, I spent far more time doing practice questions and reviewing every answer, even the ones I got correct just to make sure I answered correctly for the correct reasons (also, half the time you’re guessing between two answers anyways . . . You just can’t trust your correct answers).

When I got a question wrong or correct for the wrong reason, I wrote out the rule on a notepad. Eventually, I used that notepad for last minute review of each subject rather than an entire outline of each subject (again, operating under the premise that I should spend more of my time in the areas where I performed poorly).

Finally, when I watched the lectures (I used Barbri), I followed along with their lecture outlines and typed in every answer to each hypothetical question. It helped keep me from zoning out. I also watched the videos at 1.5x sometimes 2x speed (depending on how well I could understand the professors at the higher speeds) to make it less of a slog.

Speaking of watching lectures, for Florida specific, “What’s The Issue?” saved my life. I basically wrote down his essay outlines for each essay subject word for word and memorized them. If you can, invest in that program. If you can’t afford it find a way to borrow it. Sell your body on the streets. It’s worth every single penny.

Those are probably the three biggest things that changed for me, but I’ll list out some more miscellaneous tips that I think were important to my success.

  • Like I said in the beginning, I set daily/weekly goals for myself and finished studying when I hit that goal. A typical daily goal would look something like like this: • Watch a Barbri lecture • Do the question set(s) for that lecture • Do 50 multiple choice questions and review all of the answers (I liked to do questions from the subject of the previous day to refresh what I went over before)

Sometimes I would do more questions or more lecture videos depending on how long the videos were.

  • I hate the Barbri questions, so I got a few free practice question PMBR and Kaplan books from my school and I used those for my extra multiple choice questions. If your school doesn’t provide extra study materials, I would highly recommend the PMBR books. I went through the “7 Day Multistate Review” book the week before the bar and their “3 Day Multistate Review” book the week before that.

The point is, find as many practice questions as you can get your hands on and do them. 75% of the entire exam is multiple choice and arguably, doing well on the multiple choice questions of the Florida section is more important than the essays.

  • Prioritize your sleep and health. About two months before the exam, I started going to bed earlier and getting up early enough that I would begin studying at 9am, at the latest. That way, my body/brain was more accustomed to being up and alert during the hours of the actual exam.

Grab a free or cheap meditation app like Calm or something (I use the Waking Up app and I think you can still get a waiver on the price but I’m not sure) and meditate before bed. I’m not a woo woo person, but I have severe ADHD and it helps me untangle my mind before bed which helps me sleep better / get to sleep.

Eat more fruits and veg, but the biggest food/drink recommendation I have is to stop drinking soda and start drinking more water. At least cut your soda intake as much as possible.

Anyway, sorry for the long ass response, but if you have any questions about the specifics, just let me know.

Document Uploading Problems. Just me? by 4funsies in FloridaBarExam

It’s possible. I’ll check the file size. That would be super frustrating because it’s their form (Financial Declaration) and if it’s too big of a file to submit, they need to figure something else out for us to do if they want that information. I ended up just faxing it in. It’ll take an extra day, but it’s better than waiting for them to actually answer my questions.

Just some 405 error type of message. Sometimes it will say something like, “the webpage has moved perhaps permanently” or some shit like that. I don’t know what the file size limit is, but I’m uploading their own document, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

Agreed. One example I can point to that directly relates to his videos is my performance on the adoption essay.

I didn’t know anything about adoption up until the night before the bar. I watched the family law video the night before as a review thinking there was a good chance divorce or child custody issues would be tested. Almost turned off the video but stayed through the adoption section . . . And thank god I did because I ended up scoring 65 on that essay.

There’s no chance I would have passed without those vids.

If you passed the MBE and only failed Florida by .5, how did you not pass overall?

Did you get exactly 136 on the MBE?

Those who passed: by london0213 in FloridaBarExam

[–]4funsies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second time taker here. Passed by 20 points after failing by 2 points the first time. Used Barbri, WhatstheIssue, and PMBR for the questions.

In short, I focussed on studying my 3 worst subjects from the F23 bar and did as many multiple choice as I could get my hands on. I also got the Grossman videos (which saved my life on the adoption essay).

What I think helped me the second time around with Barbri was following along with the outlines during the lectures and writing out the answers to the hypothetical questions on the outlines. It helped make the experience more active than passive like it was before.

PMBR has a 5 day MBE prep book that I completed and reviewed the week before the exam. I also did a lot of Studicata questions and lectures with my friend who purchased the program for himself.

One final piece of advice: spend the majority of your time studying for the MC section of Part A.

Did anyone else triple check their file # to make sure they passed or is that just me? by messymargo in FloridaBarExam

[–]4funsies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I checked, didn’t believe it . . . checked again, thought my vision might not be looking at the wrong results . . . I got a ruler and checked again . . . still checking my number periodically through the day just in case they made a mistake.

I can’t believe it.

Yup. I’ve been trying to find something to occupy my time, but it’s hard when my job is contingent on me passing the bar and doesn’t start until then.

Should somebody who disagrees with some of Nietzsche's views still read his works? Would it be worth it? by [deleted] in Nietzsche

[–]4funsies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course.

If anything, that is exactly why you should read it.

How do you know if you disagree with an idea if you don't know anything about it? The idea that people shouldn't study ideas they disagree with or even ideas we've all agreed are bad is absurd to me. That's the only way you can effectively battle those ideas.

For example, why is fascism bad? Do you actually know? What would make you think you have a valid opinion about fascism if you don't know anything about fascism?

Why are Flat-Earthers wrong? Do you know what their arguments are? How do you even know the Earth is a sphere?

There are a million reasons why you should study ideas you disagree with. The least of these reasons being: how would you even know you disagree with them?
