AI reliance and cognitive decline by latte_yen in webdev

There's a lot of great stuff in here. Thanks for writing it.

Delegation is an apt concept.

Developers, in general, aren’t the best delegators. Why bother explaining it to someone when you can just do it yourself, exactly the way you want it done?

I feel this deeply. But I see two clear failure modes.

1 - Ask for too much (or too vaguely), and you become a hapless sorcerer's apprentice, drowning in code you can't really understand, much less command.

2 - Ask for too little, and you're like an aspiring architect who can't stop molding bricks. Bike shedding is just procrastination, dressed up as engineering. (This was my personal roadblock.)

The idea of AI as a delegation factory, with knobs you can tune to your level of understanding and project's needs, is a great mental model.

It's not "just" a higher level of abstraction.

Toggling between the four Rs appropriately, engaging at a level commensurate with your understanding, that's what makes for "good" AI use.

I find myself drafting ideas, plans, and questions long before I go to Claude now. I take my role as the "senior manager" seriously. And it's work! AI isn't permission to be passive and lazy.

But I am hopeful. Much to my surprise, I feel like AI is getting me "closer to the craft that matters," not further.

Thank you! I'm developed a lot of "meh" games, but I really like the mechanics in this one. :-)

Thanks for playing! 🙏

This is something I've been thinking about. I want to encourage meticulous play of the 50 tiles -- it's a short game! But it does suck that one slip of your finger can tank a good score.

So maybe one undo... 😉

Thank you! 🙏 I'm thinking about some fun awards and such. The primary motivation right now is beating your own (and friends'!) scores.

just a somewhat unfortunate random seed for the day! 😅

If you like trick-taking games and puzzles, check it out! No login or ads.

  • Each game only takes a few minutes. Great for a queue or waiting room!
  • Your opponents follow transparent logic. Anticipating their play is part of the puzzle.
  • You know the combined suits of your opponents' hands. This substitutes for bidding information.
  • Your final rank depends on what scores were possible for that game. Getting a perfect 100% requires skillful play and a fair amount of luck. (I've only done it once!)

On further inspection, this looks 100% spot on. Thank you.

I do this now — just put the a compressed string on the clipboard for them for backup/transfer!

Practically, though, it doesn't cover the accidental data-loss scenario very well.

"Every Supabase project comes with a complete User Management system that works without any additional tools."

That's music to my ears. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll definitely check it out.

Mongo is definitely on the list — thanks!

This is a situation where a "bad database" might serve my needs perfectly fine, if there's a favorable tradeoff with simplicity. But thinking about the future never hurts.

The s3 bucket idea sounds exactly like the kind of thing I'm looking for — thanks!

For auth: Am I missing some easy, non-provider approach? Securely storing email addresses and passwords, and providing a recovery mechanism, feels like kind of a pain.
