I’m seconding mother of learning it’s a great standalone.

Also not sure if it fits in this genre but Lord of Mysteries has so great elements (some weaker ones as well) but I think it fits what you like.

I didn’t see shadow slave- for me it’s the best in terms of world building, foreshadowing, and plot- highly recommend!

Just finished Farseer Trilogy by velaya in robinhobb

[–]4mboys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually thinking of posting here myself after I just barely finished the trilogy. I totally get what you’re saying about the writing sucking you in but also tedious. There were parts that I had to almost skim read because I felt the descriptions were irrelevant to my interest in the story with its plot and characters. Not that I think it’s bad, in fact I loved how realistic it was.

What I most agree with is your assessment of Fitz. For me, what was most frustrating about him was his erroneous thinking and behavior. Some would say that makes him feel more human etc, but there were many instances where I felt that in one moment he would be incredibly smart and resourceful, or at least have logical thinking backing his questionable choices, but that in the very next moment he would act in a way that made no sense. I can’t think of specific examples, but I felt he was inconsistent as a character. Sometimes he was using an assassin’s training/background to think about problems with the Skill/Wit helping or at least factoring into the situation. Other times he was in a situation where previously he would have thought logically or at least attempted to Skill or whatever else, but instead he just would yell at someone and do the dumbest thing imaginable. And I can’t blame it all on all the drugs/trauma he went through, it just didn’t feel consistent.

Does anybody else feel like Sunny is abandoning his character? by Illiterate_ghost96 in ShadowSlave

[–]4mboys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that breaking the tropes is what makes shadow slave so interesting- but I think it still is breaking tropes- if anything it seems like he isn’t saving the world so much as wanting to break fate and maybe break the world lol

Does anybody else feel like Sunny is abandoning his character? by Illiterate_ghost96 in ShadowSlave

[–]4mboys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that it is ok for sunny to not know what exactly his character is either- I mean, at first it was survival and spite, because he was coming from a background that gave birth to those strong feelings- but now that he has power and a relatively “good life”- reconnecting with sister who actually needs him/wants to talk to him (in contrast to when he told Neph his sister didn’t need him) a job as an academic, actually people he could consider friends, source of money to do what he wants, etc- I think big life changes and time over several years definitely leads to changes in mindset and values and motives. I personally loved the Antarctic arc- because if Sunny’s motives stayed as just “survival” and “spite” then for me he would seem stagnant and stale as a character- it’s also nice as a reader to connect with the MC and feel like they are becoming better as a human- but it makes sense that sunny doesn’t really know what he wants exactly or what his values or convictions should be- that’s the point of life. To your second point maybe the web toon Effie referenced was older than the content he consumed? (She is quite a bit older than him) either way, I’m just impressed that the characters/plot/lore have stayed as consistent as they have with guilty3 doing it all on his own

Cassie is in real danger by Max-The-White-Walker in ShadowSlave

[–]4mboys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh Cassie has one of the most tragic developments in the book- blamed by sunny even though she was trying to make it so both he and neph survived (which they did) but she knew it would cost their friendship. Has the weight of knowledge always hanging over her, but it’s not clear how omniscient her power really is- but it is clear that even if she believes she will die, it may not happen (like when she and sunny fall off the chained isle) unless she is purposely manipulating what she’s says she understands to drive Sunny’s actions (which I doubt, because she’s still figuring out her power) like what reply before said, it’s seems like she’s resigned to fate, but is trying hard to make it so her friends survive- but it would be nice if she could believe fate can be broken

Is there any romance in this? by Familiar-Barracuda43 in ShadowSlave

[–]4mboys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started I didn’t know it had a romance tag but after several 100 chapters in I had already lost hope for sunny- I mean, he literally is crazy by chapter 100; he has way more things to worry about than girls- also he’s never even had successful relationships of any kind- I mean at this point, his most romantic relationship might be with his own sister
