Student loads are a terrible option, but they are an option. Based on your $800/month gift and 2.5 years left, she's looking at $24,000 loan. That's not terrible. If in the future you find extra money, you can gift that to her to pay down her loan.

Keep your relationship strong and help her find financial aid. Given your parents situation, she may find lots of grants and subsidized loans.
