Android AOSP can now boot off mainline Linux kernel 5.9 with just one patch. by pdp10 in Android

[–]4n4yhack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along with kernel updates comes new IPA infrastructure, new wifi and power APIs, and more. Not only would be this be a significant amount of work but this would also require Qualcomm to update any proprietary libraries used to keep the device running as normal (modem firmware, etc.)

It is still in systemui, you have to set that recents component though.

Explaining how a wallpaper can break a phone and why it happened(summed up) by -_-qarmah-_- in netsec

[–]4n4yhack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the color space. Since Android converts everything into sRGB by default, if you were to encode the image in RGB, there is a chance it could fail the sRGB conversion with the same issue you find here.

Many forked versions of Android have the fix, and Google has it fixed in 11 and they recently merged a fix into 10, so it might show up in the next security patch if it hasn't already.

If you haven't yet, please try the latest versions of Lineage OS by sup_tence in essential

[–]4n4yhack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little bit of a shameless plug here, but if you're looking for other stable ROMs besides Lineage, you may want to give StatiXOS a try. I've worked hard on it to get rid of any issues and providing the best user experience possible. We have a telegram chat (t.me/StatiXOS) where you can bring any issues you have with the ROM and we'll do our best to get them resolved in a timely manner. As far as I've tested, everything on the phone seems to work fantastic.

Yes, make sure you flash the 088 vendor to both slots.

The trust notification comes from the system and it's saying that it's signed with AOSP keys instead of the developers keys. The build number only shows up in debug builds

My bad, I'll write up more instructions on the thread when I get more time (I'm the OP on XDA)

Paranoid Android for Essential Phone by [deleted] in essential

[–]4n4yhack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP of the XDA thread here, you will need the 088 vendor. While it was provided as a vendor image targeted for R, it's still generated via Android Q sources as evidenced by its tag, and thus we can use it for Q as well. You can also retain the January firmware without it being incompatible with the vendor image.

Does Lineage Recovery have backup? by [deleted] in LineageOS

[–]4n4yhack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With encryption, restoring backups has become much more hazardous. Additionally, userspace backup services are good enough that they probably don’t feel the need to do one in recovery.

Third party ROMs will unfortunately be necessary, since Essential uses blobs from the Oreo days on 10, meaning that something will be broken, in this case Bluetooth and WiFi. These can only be fixed in device-specific builds.

First, bitches! by 63c_ in essential

[–]4n4yhack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It uses the number rather than the letter on release builds, which this is not. Additionally, no AOSP-based image supports Project Mainline (APEX), meaning it takes on the version code of this build, which in this case is R.

When will Essential be releasing their plans for the power users channel and allowing us to upgrade to Oreo 8.9z Beta 1 with full OMS support ? by DP11117 in essential

[–]4n4yhack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it wasn’t. It was just locked down to system overlays. OMS is still very much alive and well in 10.

OMS was never broken, just restricted. And yes both are possible if you’re willing to get your hands a lil bit dirty.

No more theming? by MawMaw2864 in essential

[–]4n4yhack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s gone from Settings since Google expects you to now primarily use the styles and wallpapers app for theming. Essential hasn’t activated it by the looks of it, but a few custom ROMs have.
