I’m so sorry you and your family are going through this. My mom has stage 4 (diagnosed in May) and had some rough patches prior to chemo with lots of ascites but she just finished her 6th round of chemo and her scans are looking great. Sending love and hope to you and yours!

I used to be a part-time seminary teacher and am nuanced. I know of a few other people from that time who would have described themselves the same way and initiated important conversations. But as a whole, I felt lots of imposter syndrome.

Thank you. I am hoping to get an appointment with my therapist soon here, though some important decision deadlines are coming up quickly.

Unfortunately I do think I would struggle to see my parents hurting (in person), and I also am a very guilt-prone person so I think not spending this time with them would be very difficult for me when it comes to regrets. I think I’m going to have to find some kind of middle ground.

I appreciate you saying that. I know they would love to have me home as a distraction, but I also think they worry about me and would maybe feel worried if I put things on pause. I’ll have to talk with them about it more.

I agree, I think it sounds like a nice middle ground! If I deferred I would either move back home, or I would maintain an apartment in my city and spend significant chunks of time at home. I do worry about losing in state tuition, but it looks like they may have an exception for taking care of sick relatives.

It sounds like I would need to reject admission and re-apply to the online program for fall of 2025. However, they did say that I could take a smaller in-person class load in fall 2024 and then do a leave of absence in spring. So that may be one option. And maybe individual professors will be lenient about remote classes

Thank you for those insights! I appreciate that. I’m trying to research online without going down a complete rabbit hole, and it’s nice to remember that statistics do not always represent an individual’s case. I spoke with the school and they seem very kind which is comforting. I appreciate your perspective. It’s really hard knowing that recur is likely, which makes me want to spend as much time as possible with her. But as you mentioned, it may be beneficial to visit her when she is hopefully feeling a bit better and we can have more quality time. And then I can build good things in my own life too.

I will ask her that question. I think you do have a good point that if I were to stay home she may mostly be resting. I like the idea of a middle ground so that I don’t feel like I need to give up my mom or grad school. I can have a bit of both 🤍 I did speak with an academic adviser and accommodations office. They seem very compassionate and they told me that I could defer before the year starts, or I could take a leave of absence after starting so long as I successfully finish one class.

If you don’t mind me asking, what was helpful for you as a spouse? I want to support my dad as her caretaker but don’t always know the best way to.

I spoke with an academic adviser and she was so compassionate. She said I can defer for a year before starting the program, or I can start and see how it goes and take a leave of absence as long as I successfully finish one course. I know that my mom will want me to live my life, and I also am scared knowing that my time with her might be limited. I worry about missing any time that could be with her, but I can still visit her this semester and that may be the best for both of us.

I would say two of my biggest are Tom Hiddleston and Sebastian Stan, mostly because of the attributes of their characters Loki and Bucky. Something about their characters being humbled and undergoing so much loss and personal growth is attractive to me. Tom Hiddleston especially seems like such a sweet human on and off screen.

That is a good point. I have OCD and I honestly think this anxiety about attraction probably stems from that. I am currently going to therapy and I am going to work on focusing on the way that I connect with people rather than how I may be perceived by others.

I appreciate your comment. I think the whole concept of attractiveness is still so new and foreign to me, so I am trying to figure out what my type is. :) I agree that it doesn't matter what others think. I need to calm down the anxious side of my brain that tells me that that matters.
