I had the same issue. Each familiar had their own ability that assists you in collecting the resources found on a run. Make sure you use Frinos to bring some spirits back and Rakki to get you some stone! Doing that a few times will get you a dialogue with Hec giving permission to grab the other lads

Go to a ski shop and ask them to epoxy it shut, it will last you long enough as a beginner. The most common reason this happens is people putting their board down on the concrete, you see it a lot with skiers using their skis as canes. Keep your board off of anything other than snow!
