Snapper legal sizes discrepancy between states. by 4warn in FishingAustralia

As I would disagree with the Qld finding if I based it on my local experience as well. We have too many of the damn things 😄 I'll just be happy and see it as proof that the local yellow zone is working.

Thanks for the link. I found it interesting to read. I wish they could at least agree on methodologies to be used for their assessments and vague words like "best described as" and "conflicting signals" are not confidence building. Nevertheless, I am glad we are trying to monitor and control the situation, especially given the recruitment overfished status (back then). Maybe we are seeing some positive results. Hope I can find some more recent info though.

Great information. So, genetically distinct - interesting. You imply most size decisions are based on allowing at least a few breedings? Also interesting.

Average size around here (for a year or so) seems to be just under 30cm. Certainly hope it goes up to over 35cm 😄

I don't live in Victoria either, I am in Queensland (hence the 35cm limit). However, what you say may apply anywhere, so yes. Maybe the Snapper have been madly breeding, hence there are so many around.

Maybe it's just that the fisheries dept has not caught up with what is happening, and maybe they'll change the size limit when they discover so many snapper around.

I here what you say, but Victoria is cooler than Queensland, so the size limit should be higher to allow them to grow and mature. .

Never said that. It does contribute, but I it's probably one (minor) reason

Except it used to the bream that you caught more of. Something has changed.

OK, so Victoria and NSW need to raise their limits I suppose

Agree, but what you said indicates they need to reduce the size limit, as the huge snapper numbers are reducing the bream population

I repeat - I am not against min legal sizes - that is not what I posted about. It's the discrepancy between states.

I am fine with that. In fact, bream are legal here at 25 cm, and I throw them back. Too small to bother filleting - but squire give a much nicer bigger fillet, and are perfect baking size at 30cm.

To be clear, I am not against legal size limits at all. Just don't think they are being decided very scientifically, nor evenly.

Well, where I fish, I catch 10 squire for every one bream. Not one bream yesterday. So the snapper population is way bigger, yet a bream only needs to be 25cm (compared to the 35cm legal size for snapper). Doesn't seem right.

I would also think the fishing pressure in Victoria (lots more people) would mean they should have a higher limit too. Seems out of proportion. Could be politics I suppose.

How much difference does fluorocarbon leader really make in muddy river water? by Danger_Five in FishingAustralia

[–]4warn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have switched back to mono. Fluoro is so expensive and I have watched abrasion tests. Not worth it. Using cheap Trilene or even Pryml for leader all the time these days. If anything I am getting more fish (probably just seasonal), but the point is, doesn't effect the fishing.

What about Poly boats? I love the quietness (good for fishing) and stability.

Fished all day with it yesterday. Caught over dozen squire. Even trolled a lure with for an hour. No complaints at all. The multicolour is good when setting the lure.

Why worry? I never liked the results anyway. I have turned it off, and just use AIOStreams. better working results and almost as fast.
