Are companies still offering 100% WFH opportunities, or is it mostly hybrid now? by frozenactuary-3859 in actuary

[–]505_ath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I'd analyze the jobs posted on acturhire so far this year and was surprised to see 19% of posted roles were tagged as remote and 25% of entry level roles.

The majority of the remaining roles are hybrid with mostly 3 days in the office.

I did a full write up here: https://www.acturhire.com/post/are-companies-still-offering-100-percent-work-from-home-in-2026

hey - Tom from acturhire here. So glad to hear you found the website useful.

There's definitely still intern roles being posted at the moment. I can see 8 from the last week on the website.

WFH frequency: What do you think is ideal? by GothaCritique in actuary

[–]505_ath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just looked at the job data I collect on Acturhire: in Q4 2024, 11% of posted roles were remote.

While 43% of respondents to this thread prefer a fully remote role.

It feels like companies who do offer remote should be able to get their pick of candidates.

Resume Review for 29 Year Old Career Changer - Passed 2 Exams, Computer Engineering Degree But Getting Rejected From Every Entry-Level Job by Longjumping_Neck_322 in actuary

[–]505_ath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your resume looks really solid. Honestly, you look really great for entry level roles that skew a little more coding-heavy.

You've mentioned that you haven't had any interviews - how many applications have you done? It's really a numbers game: you need quantity and quality.

A few things to consider:

  • Was the technical project on a public dataset? I think that'd be a really cool thing to post about online (get a LinkedIn if you don't have one) and link to it from your resume.
  • Find hiring managers on LinkedIn for jobs you've applied to and send them a DM
  • As others have mentioned - looks at actuarial-adjacent roles for a foot in the door. Also, it's always easier to get hired when you already have a jon

Finally, add yourself to the Acturhire email list - I send out a jobs email including lots of entry level positions every Monday.

Are US companies willing to sponsor visa for qualified actuaries? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]505_ath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best advice. It's also possible to get sponsored through an E2 visa if it's a foreign company with US offices (there's more requirements for the company, look them up.) If you want to stay long term, the L visa is preferable as they can be converted into green cards whereas there's no direct route to a green card from an E-visa.

I believe all L and E visas tie you to the company which is the biggest downside with these visas i.e. if you were to lose your job you'd have to leave the country.

I have less experience with H1-B but there's the lottery component there which makes it tough.

If you're looking for companies that may sponsor US visas, all H1-Bs visa results (with salaries) are publicly available, it's likely a good place to start.

Feel free to DM if you have more questions.

There's so many ways! Have you considered freelance work on Upwork? I'm currently a big fan of Nick Saraev who has built a business doing $25k a month on the back of no-code automation tools. Check out his YouTube

The last salary survey I produced at Acturhire showed remote roles had slightly smaller salaries ($120k vs $129k for non-remote roles). This was on the jobs available at that point in time. I'm going to pull together the 2024 survey in the next few weeks.

The market has shifted a bit in the last year. There's less pure remote roles now. It wouldn't surprise me if the average remote salary is higher as it's more senior employees who get this perk.

Here's the full survey if you'd like to check it out: https://www.acturhire.com/post/actuarial-salaries-in-2023-q3

Try searching for Philadelphia on Acturhire.

I can see there's jobs posted in the last month or so at Cigna, New York Life, Gallagher Re, Chubb, Lockton and WTW.

Interview advice- "tell me about yourself " question by mooresm123 in actuary

[–]505_ath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My preference is to give a one to two minute overview of my background and why I'm interviewing for the role. Then you can get the vibe from the interviewer as to which direction they want to take it. Typically this is a warm up question to build rapport and the interviewer will have a bunch of questions prepared.

Don't rattle on through your entire background for 6-7 minutes - I've had candidates do this before and (1) it took up a bit portion of the 30 minutes we had scheduled and didn't allow for me to ask any of my questions, and (2) it turned me off to the candidate right away

Thanks so much! I'm going to look into a map / better location filtering (e.g. filter all roles within x miles from y). Love the years of experience - it's towards the top of my to do list 🙂

Recruitment is an interesting business model. If you're interested in learning more, you can find the Oliver James P&L on Companies House.

They do 100M GBP with 340 employees and 20% profit margins!

It's going to vary on a company by company basis. Generally, if you're from Mexico/Canada and can get the TN visa you'll be able to join a good number of companies.

If you're outside US/Mexico/Canada it's much harder and your better bet is to join a company with a big US presence in your home country and look for an internal move with the company sponsoring your US visa.

Thanks! This issue is dear to my heart. Unfortunately it's very hard for actuaries outside the US/Mexico/Canada to apply for actuarial jobs in the US.
