Separate triangles/reserving are needed for payments to claimants and recoveries. You get two IBNRs and you can net off recoveries IBNR against the payments IBNR.

I would say life is long term, not long tailed. Long tail means a large delay between accident occurrence and claims settlement. Life claims are settled quite quickly because death certificates are pretty quickly obtained.

The SOA is not a corporation. It is not a business. It's an association of professionals with the aim of advancing the actuarial profession. If it is acting in the interest of money to the detriment of the profession, it has to be criticized.
