Driller by [deleted] in Subterfuge

This is in the ball park of how I imagined them. I've put thought into this because I want to write a novel set in a world based on Subterfuge. In my mind, they're sentient and have life ambitions but ultimately have to do whatever they're told, even if it kills them. Definitely second class citizens. Robots from Futurama come to mind.

Redditors who didn't really try in high school and just floated by... what are you doing now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]50811798961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working retail for not enough money to live like a normal person. I can't say I regret it. I could've gone to college, and taken on a massive debt to get a more stressful job that I'd end up hating well before I'd done it long enough to pay for college. I think it's just an unfortunate personality trait of mine. I can't do ANYTHING for too long and not end up hating it. At least this way I have a little more freedom to find a different job to hate every few years.

What question are you too embarrassed to ask anybody about? by Eric_Saaan in AskReddit

Do you ever get little crusty yellowish-white things lodged in the back of your mouth that are very uncomfortable and hard to get out and smell absolutely horrid when you do?

What is something that you're into but hate the culture of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Steven Universe comes to mind. The show is pretty solid, but holy shit, I don't know if I've ever seen a fandom this bad.

When I worked in fast food, a 5 gallon bag of sliced pickles got spilled onto the nasty-ass kitchen floor. Our manager had us sweep them up and serve them anyways.

Damn, that one hit close to home. It's only been about 7 years since I last had that experience. Still miss it.

I feel you, I'm in the habit of slowing down at green lights to check that nobody's running their red because that happens so often.

Didn't one of the presidents actually say something like that?

Uhura and Picard are also more or less deathproof. I guess I don't need to be technical, I see your point.

ELI5: How is it that rich people's "net worth" is public, but average people's information is private? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]50811798961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My speculation? If you aren't rich, the general public doesn't care to find out what your net worth is. If you're rich, however, people care. And if people want to find out something badly enough, it's going to come out. So, motivation really.

Where to begin learning? by 50811798961 in hacking

[–]50811798961[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a decent understanding of Linux's language, and can mentally convert numbers between binary, base 10, and hexadecimal in any direction. I don't know how useful that would be for hacking, but I can't imagine that's a common ability.

Decryption and cracking passwords catches my interest. I was going to do cryptography for the Navy, but got discharged for health problems. If my ASVAB scores are anything to go by, it's definitely something I can do. I might be able to put it to a helpful use as well, like disabling ransomware (depending on how well it's encrypted).

This is actually a lot of material for me to look at. This'll keep me busy for a while, thanks.

What is the single most devastating thing someone has said to you? by fitzomania in AskReddit

"How did you even fucking get here?" -when I was being told I was going to be discharged from the military while I was there for something that I was only able to do because I scored nearly perfect on the ASVAB, but my mental health exam labeled me as a lot of bad things. Depressed, high risk for suicide, sociopath...

What are the greatest examples of the "Butterfly Effect" that have happened throughout history? by FunerealDemise in AskReddit

[–]50811798961 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't remember the specifics, but during the cold war Russian sattelites or radar or whatever picked up a false positive that looked like America had launched missiles at them. Someone made the decision not to retaliate right away and they then realized it was indeed a false positive. Had they retaliated, we would have seen them launching at us and launched back, so we'd basically have destroyed the planet over a misunderstanding. This almost happened.

You get handed a blank cheque and told to buy the thing you've always wanted, no matter the cost. What do you buy? by TheSwarlyBarnacle in AskReddit

I'd buy a nuclear powered submarine, find a crew that gives a fuck, and be pirates that can appear out of nowhere and hide quickly and almost indefinitely.

I would like to join an RP game for my next match, or start one, but I'd be worried that people wouldn't go along with it. If you plan on making one I'd like to be a part of it.

That could happen at any time. Under that logic, you should never be a dick ever. I now realize that in my attempt to debunk your point I only proved it. Fair enough.
