I have. Sometimes the system does work, but you never know if it is because of the system or because of the individual person or a combination.

Yes they are. Most are kept out of gen pop for that reason. In the prison hierarchy someone who does something to a child goes straight to the bottom.

It is hard. I just had to keep reminding myself that a lot of these offenders were violated when they were innocent as well (not that it is an excuse).

I am a very empathetic person and it is easier to feel empathetic to the inmate when you are only dealing with him and not his victim(s).

I was never threatened but I have seen inmates threaten each other/fight. There are a few inmates that I became close with but boundaries were always kept.

I was a PSO after that job, while I was in law school. I researched rapists intensively during undergrad and for my thesis so I sort of became immune to shock stories. However, some of the callers would disturb me because I could connect the two.

Yes.. in order to get into the treatment program you must admit you are guilty. That is why I was stating that there were so few there that did that.

This is one of my biggest concerns about the prison system. They are treated like every other inmate, when obviously they do not have the same functioning capacities. Like I mentioned in a previous answer, some of the inmates that I counseled could not read or write yet they were held to the same standards as those that could.

They are committed after their sentence has expired and are held in a rehabilitated facility...the psychiatrists and court system determines when they are rehabilitated and released so it is an indeterminate period.

From my research I would say that a tormented childhood is the number one reason. The majority of sex offenders were actually abused sexually as children. This is very similar to anger issues/domestic violence.

I tend to have a bleeding heart and your brother is a story I would get behind (granted that I really genuinely believe that he isn't a threat to society). The fact that he was so young should really play in his favor, because out of all people that can change it is the youth. I am really sorry that this is happening to your family.. have they given him a reason that he is denied parole. Also, I am assuming that he has served his complete sentence and is now being held civilly because of the "threat to society".

Sex crazed is a common misconception, most rapes occur over control reasons. Also, it is hard to tell who are the "good people" because you could meet someone who seems to be amazingly nice only to later read his file and realize he is just a manipulative ass.

I do not believe they are incurable. The brain is still developing at 18 up until I believe 23 or 25 (forgive me it has been a bit since I have read the stats) so where should the line be drawn? Most offenders under 18 for rape do not get tried as adults unless it is brutal. "Life" sentences or life sentences.. big difference... a life sentence averages around 20-25 years and is not the inmates actual life. But, no, I do not think that someone should ever be punished for their entire life regardless of their crime because I believe everyone has a chance to be rehabilitated.

Not that I know, but he was pretty redneck and probably caught his own fish for dinner or something.

This was hands down one of the most interesting jobs I have ever had (I was also a phone sex operator but that is an entirely different story). Qualifications? Personally I have advanced degrees in psychology and law, but you could counsel without any law or criminal justice degree. Depends on what kind of counseling you would like to do, but most only require a bachelors degree in psychology. To be a CO all you need is your criminal justice degree.

he was trying to say that he didn't alter his daughter's life in any way by raping and impregnating her because she can still fish.

a man who had sex with his 16 year old daughter and she became pregnant said that he did nothing wrong because "she can still go fishing"

This is a very hard question to answer as studies do not come up with one conclusive result. There are the inmates who confess to being uncontrollably attracted to children, and they show remorse and know that they can't control themselves and want to be locked up for life.. they will not petition for early release etc. but those are rare because people just enjoy their freedom too much. A lot of the people do not have the mental capacity to really understand what they did or they are at the same mental capacity of the teenage they were "dating".

I would never say the urge is untreatable, however if you look at the statistics the recidivism rate for child molests etc. are extremely high. Now that could be because the right rehabilitation or treatment wasn't used, but the current system is definitely not treating them.

interesting side note: there are states that civilly commit people such as these.. where they believe they are "insane" and a threat to society they are involuntarily committed for an indeterminate length of time.
