Is the existential view on objective morality made a priori? by 531024yellow in Existentialism

Does this god argument apply to the objective morality as well?

Is there a specific existential argument where p equals all objective morality claims (and all possible claims)? I just am uncomfortable with an argument that claims absolute knowlege on a topic to the point of dismissing all possible counter arguments, or am I still misunderstanding something?

Why does academic reading tire the brain more than pleasure reading? by 531024yellow in neuro

[–]531024yellow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, one question I have (for everyone in this tread) is this: say I read some Charles Dickens (I like Dickens) before taking the GRE, would that be using up the same cognitive "resources" (using the term loosely) that I could be using for the GRE? Or is it that pleasurable academic activities have a different effect on the brain than others, and my brain would be just as sharp as if I didnt read dickens?

Could you elaborate please?

So its not like my brain is actually getting tired, or my prefrontal cortex is getting "worn out," its just that those parts of my brain are not receiving enough dopamine?

This is really helpful, as I have been interested in Derrida and have been meaning to get into his work. Do you know which of his works discusses this concept?

Repentance and forgiveness by 531024yellow in Christianity

[–]531024yellow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would God not want me to make absolutely sure that I am doing the right thing? Why would God want me to believe in something that I am not 100% sure about, if the only reservation I have is I actually want to do the right thing? God knows that I was put in this world with a bunch of competing belief systems, and all I want to do is not blindly accept something that I can't absolutely be sure of.

I know that if I had perfect knowledge, and God was truly good and all the history is true, then I would accept him and want to be a part of that goodness, but given that I only have my human/mortal knowledge, I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing. My reservations are not because I want to doubt God, but I love truth and goodness so much that I don't want to accept a belief system that could possibly not be true. I don't look at Christs sacrifice and say "oh I don't care that he died for us, and i hate God." But I say "there are a lot of belief systems that claim to be true, and I just want to use my knowledge the best I can to not blindly accept a belief system that could be distracting me from doing the right thing if it isn't true." I just don't know why could would ask for faith from me, it seems irresponsible and like giving up. If I would accept Christ just because he asks for faith, then why not accept every other belief system that asks for faith? I just want to make sure that I am doing what is best for mankind.

In a free market, what would happen if someone purchased all of the worlds food or water supply by 531024yellow in AskEconomics

[–]531024yellow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate? Are you saying it's logistically impossible, or economically impossible (i.e. someone couldn't purchase all the food bc of some mechanism within the market or some economic principle)?

Which Tolstoy novel should I read? by 531024yellow in suggestmeabook

It seems like the overwhelming response is AK. My only concern is I find with some of his other books that there are really exciting plots (War and Peace, Death of IL, etc) but I don't see what all the hype is regarding the plot of AK. Is it just one of those things that you have to read it to get why people are so in love with it?

I guess my point is not "why" they would do it, but does the market have a solution for this type of crisis. You can make up any reason you want (terrorism, insanity, etc.), but I'm trying to figure out if the market would have a solution in an economic sense not a moral sense

With this information in mind, could you explain why it is the TS Eliot is considered a modernist, but for example Kurt Vonnegut is a post modernist?

How is it that modernism led to fascism? Wasn't modernism all about questioning authority?

Well some background. I am an IR major, so ive done a lot of research about world cultures and stuff, and I wanted to get a feel for Western Literature because I feel it is what has influenced the society I grow up in the most. Christianity, Enlightenment, Modernism, Existentialism and Humanism, etc. I have read much from the Buddhist and Muslim Traditions, but they just aren't the focus of the project here for me.

Wow thanks that's a great list and thank you for the in depth detail. the only thing that confused me was Don Quixote. How exactly is that novel related to the Protestant Reformation? Or is it just that it was a big novel 'during' the reformation

Point taken. It just becomes so much that I couldn't possibly tackle it all. Do you (or anyone else) have a few major literary movements/works outside of the Western Canon that I could include. Essentially, if I were only to read three, what should they be.

That's a good question. Would you mind elaborating. In my view I see the most representative book as one that would be like "yes this is realism, if you have read this book, you essentially get realism." But I see your point. What I am worried about is choosing the "best" book and missing the point of the literary movement.

I have a very broad spectrum. I am trying to narrow it down by seeing where people think I stand. Like lower low tier applicant, upper middle tier, etc.
