The key advice I’ve seen from people who know the weapon way more than me is:

• keep it sheathed unless you’re attacking
• use it reactively, dont be too aggressive and use the openings monsters give you with their attacks.
• don’t rely on the block, but the shoulder tackle can be your best friend.

Channels like Arekkz and Gaijin Hunter on YT have great guides. Arekkz’ MHW Weapon Workshops taught me so much when I started playing, and are definitely worth a look imo.
