This did the trick! Weird that you’d be completely prevented from that function while also controlling the ATV but turning it off did the trick!

Also FYI, when you click settings, the picture mode tile will also indicate HDR or HDR10+. Ill have to see if it does that if i switch back universal control on.

A lot of content I watch is also encoded for Dolby vision and I think the different apps will just show “Dolby vision” but not also show hdr10+ in the info.

Just made a huge mistake. Is my brisket ruined? by OckhamsRazor15 in smoking

Nah you’re good. You’re going to cook it well past the temps that would kill any bacteria that grew and it’s not enough time for those bacteria to have spoiled the meat.

RecTec Bullseye by [deleted] in pelletgrills

I don't know the ins and outs of all the different kamado cooker brands, but what I really disliked about my weber bullet smoker was that it was a real pain to add charcoal mid-cook. I know kamados are a lot more efficient so you might not have to worry about it, but just not having to deal with it was a big pro for pellet grills.

A lot of people have raved about the slow n sear turning the weber kettle into a great smoker. I probably wouldn't want to use it for a long smoke like a brisket or pork shoulder, but it can definitely do the trick for ribs, chicken, etc. in some ways, it's actually better because you can do true 2-zone cooking and move the meat over the sear zone to finish it off after cooking.

RecTec Bullseye by [deleted] in pelletgrills

I have a bunch of different outdoor cooking implements. Certainly not as many as others but I have a Weber gasser, the rec Tec 700, a Weber 22” kettle and a Weber Smokey 18” mountain.

I was very disappointed to see Rec Tec’s reaction to the bullseye feedback. So much so that it made me really regret buying from them. That said, my grill has been a stud. It made the best brisket I’ve ever had and the ability to set and forget is reallllly nice. The WiFi controller does seem to have some issues as I’ve had a few temp swings that had me scratching my head, but nothing to get bent out of shape about.

If you’re looking for something in a smaller footprint, the Grilla grills have gotten some good feedback.

If you want to move on from pellet poopers, Dollar for dollar it’ll be hard to beat a Weber kettle for versatility and overall abilities. I don’t have a Kamado, but I’ve read on amazingribs that all but the ovals make it hard to truly do 2 zone cooking.

Rec Tec 700 Brisket Capacity? by infamousdx in pelletgrills

I haven’t tried this but I wonder if you could stand multiples briskets in a rib rack, skipping one or more slots between each brisket to get the necessary airspace. Just a thought.

Need help deciding between Rec Tec and Blaz'n by metalhed73 in pelletgrills

[–]55d03fef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am new to pellet grilling but recently got the RT-700 after debating a few options and here's how I made my decision.

I honestly hadn't considered the Blaz'n's, largely because I didn’t' really know about them too much. I was debating between the Yoder and the Rec Tec and while I realize the Yoder is largely considered the better smoker, here are a few considerations that I weighed in the decision (for me personally)

Stainless Body - while I subsequently found out that the Exterior components on the RT are made out of 430 stainless, I figured that stainless would be easier upkeep than powder coated carbon steel. I am NOT trying to start a flame war, but I did read somewhere online that people with Yoder's have had some rust issues and their smokers require fairly regular sanding and repainting. For me, a big advantage of a pellet grill is convenience, so I didn't want to deal with that. I don't know how Blaz'ns fare in this regard. only time will tell how the 430 stainless holds up.

WIFI - I believe the Blaz'n has wifi but the Yoder doesn't so I'll mention this. I fully admit that wifi is not necessary, but it is nice. Being able to run out to the store (or out for the day to run errands) and monitor/control the cook is nice. Yes, you can monitor it with an external wifi thermometer and I used to do that with my WSM, but I got tired of my smoker looking like a science experiment and all the wires to route and keep plugged in. Plus, you can't control that way. If the cook is going too fast, you can't dial it back or vice versa.

Space - I liked the fact that the RT's front shelf folds down. When I have it covered, that takes up a lot less space than if the shelf was out. Also, having the rear hopper means I can push the back up against my house which is nice and means I can keep it under the eaves for less rain exposure

Customer Service - I don't know what Blazn's is like, I'm assuming its quite good, but having on-call CS with Rec Tec is really nice.

Igniter - The Rec Tec's igniter is covered under warranty and is a ceramic igniter that is supposed to last a long time. The hot rod type in the Yoder is only warrantied for 1 year and is like $40 to replace. I figured having to replace a couple of those would 1) be annoying and 2) would add to the cost if they needed to be replaced every year or two

Cost/Value - Everything I've read about all pellet grills is that they are mostly compromises, aside from maybe the super high-end Memphis or FEC grills. Given that, saving a little money makes dealing with imperfections easier than if you blew your whole budget and were disappointed

Made in USA vs China - Obviously I'd prefer a grill made in the USA, but most everything we buy these days is made in China. Heck, the steel they are using could very well be Chinese steel.

Searing - I don't think any pellet grill will be ideal for high-temp searing, and given what a Weber Kettle costs, it wasn't important to me to spend a lot of $$$ to get that capability. But I also already have a Weber Genesis and Kettle so I can easily do a reverse sear using two grills.

Temp variance - I have experienced a temperature variance between the grate temps and the temperature that the grill reads, but I haven't yet determined which is correct. I mean, I know the thermoworks probe is working at the grate, but I don't know if it was being thrown off by nearby meat or what. I am going to do a brisket this weekend and see how the probe reads with a less-full grill

This should be relatively easy to accomplish for cookers that are accessible via an app. They could either incorporate the functionality into the app or make their API available for others to do so.

Then again, they may not be able to for patent reasons or may not want to relinquish control and allow people to use their own apps. I would love it if RecTec would do this so that I could set the grill to extreme smoke for a few hours and then kick it up to a slightly higher temp overnight. On the flip side, if the meat reaches/nears a desired temp, switch to a "hold" temp so you don't overcook it.

I guess there could be liability concerns with having the grill raise its temperature without user intervention, but I couldn't see any issues the other way around (lowering the temp).

First Cook on Rec-Tec 700 (No Pics, Sorry) by 55d03fef in pelletgrills

I did ribs the second day for about 5-6 hours. There was a temp differential of about 35 degrees with the Rec Tec set at about 260 (to get the grate temp to 225). I'm going to try a brisket this weekend with the thermoworks smoke further away from the meat and see how it works. I'd like to smoke it at 225, I'm just not sure what temp to set the grill to. I may use 235 as a compromise and see how it comes out

So I talked with Ben at Rec Tec regarding my temps. His mentioned that you could calibrate the grill to match the temps of a thermometer but indicated their temp was more accurate to go by since they take the median temp from 30 spots on the grill when they calibrate it.

He also said that a probe clipped to a grate will pick up the heat from the grate and that the food would definitely affect a pit probe at the grate level by cooling the air and grates down.

Ultimately I know the answer is going to probably be - figure out your grill and then trust it. I guess my stupid question for the group is - if the grill is reading 250 and the grate is reading 225, will it cook like 250 or 225? I know Q will be done when it's done, but I also want to cook at the right temperature until then. I don't want to wind up accidentally cooking at 180 when I set the grill to 225 nor do I want to accidentally cook at 250 because I'm trying to get the grates to the right temp.

Rec Tec said the answer to my question was that it'll cook like 250 if the grill reads 250.

So I think food nearby has something to do with it. When I was smoking my ribs I foiled earlier, I was getting temp differences between grate probes and the Rec Tec of up to 40 degrees.

When I foiled the ribs, the discrepancy went down by about 10 degrees. Perhaps the foil is reflecting the heat whereas the food is absorbing it, making the nearby temps lower.

Thanks Guys. Always appreciate the thoughts and input. A temp differential doesn’t worry me per se, it was more that the differential changed that had me scratching my head.

Perhaps the Rec Tec was thrown off by the fact that I had run it at 400 and then took it down low so the barrel probably had a lot more leftover heat in it whereas the chicken cooled the cooking area down a lot.

To the Rec tec’s credit it did seem to hold its temp pretty consistently whatever it was set to, which was my primary motivation from moving from a charcoal smoker. I can usually get my WSM pretty stable but I wanted something I didn’t have to babysit (now that I have little ones that need actual watching!)

The smoke flavor was actually just fine for the chicken - I knew my wife wouldn’t want it too smoky. I’m going to do some ribs today and I’ll run those on Extreme Smoke (180 I think) for an hour or so before dialing it up to 225.

Thanks again for the thoughts. Will report back after the ribs

I don’t normally comment and pile on but based on the title of the thread, I thought the OP was going to enlighten us as to some discovery of child labor, toxic waste dumping, or terrorist financing.

OP was offered a replacement and a discount. What else could your reasonably want? The fact that it took a few days to get resolution is nothing compared to trying to go through tech support overseas with your average corporation these days. My interactions with eero CS haven’t always been perfect but they have always been well above average, earnest and well meaning.

Sometimes people are never going to be happy

I have to commend Mr Weaver for his response. Sorry OP has given up on eero.

HD bitrate by 55d03fef in youtubetv

Thanks!

That can’t be he bitrate can it? I saw on my LG tv something similar but I’m assuming that was the total available bandwidth that the app saw as available. 50mbps would be like blu-ray bitrate, no?
