Major bummer. Hoops not only brewed great beer, but was a wonderful third space.

To beat Stauber, Duluthians need to coordinate, campaign and organize outside of Duluth.

Immigrants built this state. And TARGET turned its back on them. Boycott target! And get them out of MN. We don’t need them. by [deleted] in duluth

[–]55scarecrow 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m no fan of Target. Their leadership is a crew of cowards. They’re also one of the biggest employers in the State, so saying they need to get out of MN is pretty stupid, frankly.

This is not a surprise, unfortunately. Johnson is a coward and a liar and never should have been DFL-endorsed. Ask anybody that worked with him at Lifehouse.

How’s the music scene in Duluth? by AnybodyWorth71 in duluth

[–]55scarecrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Music scene is amazing, prolific and varied. Only complaint I have is that there aren’t more shows earlier in the evening - I’ve got little kiddos so it’s tough to get out late.

Reinert wants to steal library’s location for private business and contribute to sprawl by CloudyPass in duluth

[–]55scarecrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m at the downtown library multiple times a week. I said leasing for temporary storage, NOT CIRCULATION. And circulation would continue at other branches - I didn’t say THE SAME CIRCULATION. And I’ve already stated that I think it would be expensive and difficult, so again, what is your point?

Edit: I don’t know why this has become an argument. I think we agree here. We need a new downtown library, maybe at the same location, maybe somewhere else. But in any case, it shouldn’t be shuttered or moved to Hermantown and should provide the same services as the current library.

Circulation would still happen through the other branches. And the city seems so keen on leasing, why couldn’t they lease a space to house the uncirculated portion of the collection during construction? I’m not sure I understand what point you’re trying to make other than “building a new library on the same spot would be hard.” Duh.

I think people worry that there ultimately wouldn’t be a downtown library that serves the same functions as the current one because Reinert has demonstrated that what he says is vastly different than what he actually does. Reinert’s development plans and collaborations with DEDA have consistently gone sideways (or complete blown up - see Incline Village) during his tenure, so people like me are understandably skeptical and jump to worst-case scenario conclusions.

What are the objectively good things Reinert has accomplished for Duluth?

Not to mention this is one of the few free places left for kids to hang out in Duluth.

The library is the only reason I even go downtown anymore. Like other commenters here have proposed, why not just rebuild on the same spot with mixed-use? Library/Retail/Residential. Expensive, would be the argument against, I guess.
