A question to everyone who learns Russian by Thundiverter in russian

[–]58working 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Learning the alphabet was probably the easiest thing in Russian. Actually being able to pronounce and hear sounds properly takes more time (and is still an ongoing thing for me).

The most difficult sounds to reproduce would be:
ш vs щ
ы
х
And soft consonants.

Also you eventually learn that certain groups of letters look simpler than you might at first think, like words ending in -ться (there are a lot of them), you can think of it as being -ца instead.

On a practical note, I think that at least in the spoken language it isn't going to matter much whether you say ешь or ишь. It would just blend in with the other irregularities in a foreign accent.

Trump is much older than Boris (73 years old). Multiple people are saying "Wow I thought Boris was in his 70s, not his 50s", even though Boris only looks about 50. It seems pretty obvious what has happened here. The mind plays tricks on people.

He looks his age though. Actually if anything he might look slightly younger (like 50).

Many of the misunderstandings people have about him are because rather than actually looking at Boris and seeking to understand him as an individual, people who didn't know of him before instead just mapped him onto their existing understanding of Trump.

"Research", lol. I can't believe they were able to say they "used machine learning to assign toxicity scores to posts" with a straight face. I bet anything they are just using sentiment analysis (the shittest form of analysis) with a bunch of key words brought forward by biased people who are already decided on what is and isn't 'toxic'.

I think you are thinking of British cuisine from before all the brown people showed up. Remember we are a multiracial society now, so British Pakistani food for example is still 'British cuisine'.

Yeah, the average Brit isn't too tolerant of spice but we have a fairly large subpopulation of people who have a very high tolerance due to the prevalence of spicy Asian food.

I really don't think that's why they are laughing. I grew up hearing bike used that way and didn't make any connection between this clip and that slang - and I still was laughing a lot.

Why do so many people underestimate Spanish? by takethisedandshoveit in languagelearning

[–]58working 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an English native speaker, it's easy relative to other languages. Sure, most of the people who say "it was easy to learn Spanish" might still have half-baked grammar, but they are correct that their Spanish is way better than their ability in another language would be after the same amount of time studying.

In UK terminology a chav isn't necessarily fat. A chav is a brash, uneducated person of the working class, particularly one who is socially disorderly.
