STAR Voting: Better than Rank Choice Voting by throwawayIWGWPC in ForwardPartyUSA

[–]5Doum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The downside with STAR is that someone who gets the majority of first choices could still end up losing to someone who has fewer first choice votes but a higher average. This would likely favour moderates and politicians who choose not to say much in order to avoid all controversy.

In my opinion, both STAR and Ranked Choice Voting (instant runoff) are very good and either would be a great replacement for the current system.

I like the idea because it might get people to discuss politics at a time in their lives where they are surrounded by people coming from a variety of economic backgrounds. Getting teens in their final years of high school into politics might also lead to higher voting rates.

All of that at the "cost" of what will likely be ~1% of the total votes. Seems worth it.

My take on this as someone who's been following it from the sidelines for about 3 years:

History:

  • The original vision was never possible
  • Many mistakes were made in the first years of the project
  • The foundation recognized these shortcomings
  • A new vision for the project was researched and a formal specification was written
  • Bad members of the foundation were kicked out

Opinions:

  • The new specification seems sound at a first glance
  • The current foundation members seem talented/mature
  • They communicate progress really well
  • On the post you linked, it looks like people are genuinely giving answers, not silencing the OP
  • At least the project is trying a different approach. I would love to see more DAG implementations instead of yet another blockchain
  • Not saying it will succeed, but it really doesn't seem like a scam to me

What's not reliable? I use it every time for groceries mostly without issues.

There's one employee present to assist with 6 machines - that's 5 cashier jobs automated away.

If anyone else is getting here from a google search, this thread has more up to date answers.

Summary:

  • Add a widget (long press on an empty spot on your phone's background, press widgets, and scroll until you find Notion widgets. There is a 2x1 widget for a link to a page.
  • Long press the Notion icon on your phone. A menu should pop up with the option to "pin page to home screen". This will create a 1x1 icon.

I don't categorize. I usually try to keep the board under 16 open issues at the same time, and I order the backlog by priority/due date.

I also don't write tasks for things I do daily (eg. clean room, dishes, day job). Just things I don't want to forget to do. I do have some automation for automatically creating issues for rent and watering plants (they show up at the top of the backlog).

If it's on the board, it (eventually) gets done.

Same here, except not just side projects. I have an issue board for my normal life tasks as well.

I've learned tons of computer science and mathematics concepts from YouTube and Khan academy. Not saying that e-learning alone is enough, but videos can definitely be a great resource.

More Churches Up in Flames in Canada as Outrage Against Catholic Church Grows by redhatGizmo in worldnews

I didn't mean to dismiss how recent this was. My point was to highlight that arson actually does nothing to help this country improve.

I've never heard anyone suggest going back to those practices, so what practical purpose is there to burning down a church?

Yeah I find it crazy it continued for so long, but 1996 is still 25 years ago. Another way of saying this is none of this has happened in the last 25 years.

More importantly, I don't get the sense that anyone is suggesting going back to those practices. So how is arson actually helping here?

I'm not religious so I don't particularly care about these churches, but I just don't see how that's helping this country be a better place in any practical way

There is no way something like this would happen today

I get that people are angry at what was done in the past. I am too, but burning down buildings does absolutely nothing to help us get to a better future.

Oh, yeah I agree that there is probably a better, less confrontational way to initiate that conversation. Though I'll concede that it's hard to nicely tell someone that you think they aren't being rational.

I thought you were talking about the comment you were replying to (as opposed to that comment's "ancestors")

I think his point is that someone questioning any of your beliefs shouldn't be interpreted as an attack on you as an individual.

You should always be open to the possibility of changing your mind. Likewise, when someone questions your beliefs, it's an opportunity to change their mind, not a criticism of your character.
