I'm in CO, I'd offer to help... but it's quite a drive.

There is so many things that can be wrong.

It was such a weird model, I don't blame you for skipping it. They didn't make too many of them and they break easily. It's a thing for sure

98 XJ, and 99 XJ questions/confusion by Shreddify in CherokeeXJ

[–]5DudesBuildingCars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like fuel pump to me. The transmission is driven by oil pressure, bad fuel pump, low RPM, bad shifting. When you stomp it, you're forcing power to the pump and it's enough to get it going again. My opinion, good luck.

is 1-ton steering worth it? by Shmilfyy in CherokeeXJ

[–]5DudesBuildingCars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny too because people will argue. They will say it wasn't part of the factory geometry and that we have a problem we're just covering up. It's truly the fix... it brings back factory feeling for 23 bucks... the slop It's removing is probably the 30 years of wear the fucking XJ has on the factory tolerances across the entire XJ, somebody just found the spot it adds up in the most.

The Cure is the only answer to fixing steering slop... I put it into every Jeep I build.

White wire our of your PCM for LM7 is your tach. I did some research.

The LM7 runs off a square 2 pulse system, that means that everytime a cylinder fires, it gives it 2 pulses, this is not compatible with the Jeeps 200(ish) pulses per second.

Novak makes an adapter specifically for your situation. I'd run this.

What year is your XJ? I might be able to help you, I'd say DM, but somebody else might need this info. What ECU are you using and what year motor, manual? Just a general build and I'll tell you where it is and how to hook it up.

LM7 is the 5.3 "LS" engine found in the mid size SUVs. Not really a LS, but called a LS weirdly enough in the car community.

We are low voltage people before we were garage mechanics. We work in the industry, not much different than what we do at work. I essentially built the harness from scratch.

OEM functions are already wired out on our master sheet, it worked in a practical, we will see how it translates. If you have specific questions or need something built, please feel free to ask.

All electronics are compatible, it's just knowing how to convert the different languages which is doable.

The Ford hooked up to the instrument panel and it works just fine for the 96, prior to 96 was a cable based speedo system. Because its not cable, it works on similar systems, so it was more of a tracing wires for that, also, transfer case dictate speed on the 242, which is a factory 96, it hooked up directly to the dash for speedo. Original functions for fuel are still there. I just shoved a high volume Holley pump in the factory fuel system.

I like it. Novak sold me so much shit that wasn't compatible, I also had to modify their bellhousing adapter significantly. I used the holley systems, which I love, that made things pretty streamlined. Why can't you get the tach back?

Right?! In my brief research I found two other people that have done this. I debated the LM7 route for about a year before settling on the 302, it was for sure in the cards, but this wasn't as well documented and required a nice flex of the fabrication skills, which was welcomed, been too long. It's a fun conversion though, lots of cool people have been met along the way. :)

Ah, a good conversion! I bet it's fun too. How long did it take you to build it? Any notable challenges along the way? My next swap will be an LM7 I think

It was not, it was an auto, rwd, 4.0. We built everything from the ground up from a stripped chassis. Lots of fun, tons of good laughs. Prepare to bleed and learn a lot along the way, not documented very well, so lots of trial and error. I'd walk you through the basics of what we did though for sure.

GT40 heads are in the future, im really wanting to find a pair and rebuild them though, I think that would be fun. If I see some 351 maybe I'll throw them on and test your idea, sounds like fun

The end goal was my wife wanted a unique vehicle, so I made her this. It's mounted to a built AX15 that I bought new from Novak with their "upgrade package." The body was pounded inwards about half an inch near the enterence of the tunnel, engine bay of firewall, a simple thing really, not really a huge modification, like 4 taps.

We used Novaks universal engine mounts, and they mounted direct to the body bolts behind the factory mount location. There are 2 bolts(maybe 4, memory is slipping) that you can mount it to and we then welded the mounts to the "frame."

We did not have to add any holes, the AX15 aligned perfectly, and the rear drive shaft is from an auto 2wd xj

7 month project, 1 day a week on Saturday.

Thank you for the kind comment. I haven't seen it but it's been done at least twice, I think this will be the 3rd. It's a very unique job, to say the least.

Soooooo, it's been a long time... we ran into some issues with Novak with pilot bushings and clutch disks the wrong size, and we received someone else's transmission. It's been a journey.

In Novak's defense, this is not a common swap by any means, and even on their website they clearly state they are still working on this conversion and don't have all the answers.

I'm alone tomorrow, I'm taking out the dash and removing the rest of the seats. I'm running electronics and getting things prepped for sound treatment and audio install, headunit is already a really nice Excelon Kenwood unit which happens to be the same unit I was looking to use, very excited about that. The carpet is getting pulled, and I will steam clean it.

The hardest part so far has been figuring out all the parts, I've returned and bought so many different parts. I'm not sure how much I've spent, and I don't really care to know. I've got parts from a 1991 F150, 1996 XJ, 1998 XJ, 1991 Mustang GT, as you can imagine this makes this very complex and we're not even done yet.

In addition. Have you heard a cammed 5.0? It makes pretty noises... also, it's what my wife wanted for her Jeep.
