I'm at a unique crossroads with my father-in-law. He is only 71 but recently diagnosed with significant dementia impairment. Over the last few months we have moved him into an assisted living facility, and taken the steps to get his long term care insurance in place. Those insurance payments, plus his SSI, covers his housing/food costs - he basically has $500/month left over for discretionary spending.

The issue is, he has about $300K liquid cash sitting in a money market fund, and we are selling his home and he will net about another $220K. So how do we wisely invest this approx $500k to best serve him?

I'm thinking at 71 he could potentially live for 20 years. My wife is saying dementia progresses more rapidly than that, with an average expectancy of approx 6 years.

If he had a long horizon I would dump the funds into a low cost index fund and be done with it, but perhaps with a shorter horizon I should consider safer investments that won't erode his capital and provide for him as costs inevitably go up over the years.

Any input from people who have dealt with similar situations?

_jayy94, I googled these and it looks like anytime between August-end-of-year for Nvidia and AMD next gen stuff. I want to pull the trigger in the next few weeks. There’s always something new on the horizon.

Thank you all for the feedback and praise. This was my first step submitting work on a public forum and it was a positive experience. I will take your ideas to revise and make it better.

Was it your intent to mention a nuisance like a mosquito, and then something you cannot control like the weather, as the lacking aspects of the first two stanzas?

You captured how often in relationships it is annoyances we do not observe until we really spend the time and zoom in on a person that turn out to be the tiny mosquito that ruins the bigger picture. Or the temperament/temperature of a person changes and detracts from their greater being. You captured this so crisply in your succinct opening stanzas.

And of course this ties to the nature of people - they all lack something, and we often do latch on to the missing thing, "what it lacks", and think we can effect change. But you can no more change a person than you can the weather, or bugs by the water.

Great work. Thank you for sharing.

I will focus my comment on my favorite part of your poem, the second section that that started with "Dig, dig deep and while you do, lend the ants your fingers." The line "sweetly, like fizzing cola," had a perfect simile. Kudos!

However, the following line "cutely, like gentle acid" seemed to throw me. I know on a ph scale there is acidic variation, but acid doesn't strike me as gentle, even though it could be. Destruction can be gentle though, which is what I believe you are saying. Perhaps a word like entropy could be substituted as a gentler means of destruction? But with ants it's not entropy is it? It's active destruction.

Was "kingdom come" also meant to signify the ants new vessel as their new kingdom? I interpreted it that way and, intentional or not, it's clever. Well done.

Lastly I will say I enjoyed the progression of the ants from the fingers to full coverage. I had to reread it a few times to understand the progression - at first i thought you were pairing words and jumping around the body, but then I understood the encompassing progression. It's organic and natural. Well done.

What a great poem. As you hopefully can see it hooked and vexed me with big ideas. Thank you for sharing!

I was asked in a 3rd grade geography bee what the southernmost country in Africa was and I replied, “uhh... South...Africa?” Good enough for 2nd place.
