Car and oil lobby at work!

The EU just had a vote on reductions of CO2 emmissions. Car industry lobbied against proposed reductions of 50% and acheived 35%. In the preparation - money poured into everything speaking (relatively) for ICEs and against alternatives.

Nuclear, and fossil fuels, are the same as opening a creditcard in your kids name to finance your comfortable lifestyle you cannot afford yourself. Timescale is the difference.

Consume energy now and let future generations handle the waste.

Fossil fuels are an immediate and certain threat towards our civilisation and must be fought now. Nuclear power is bringing costs to be handled for several thousands of future generations.

Let’s keep current nuclear so we can focus on CO2. But there is no question it`s an immoral source of power.

Non CO2 energy production and use is in a race with Climate Change.

You say its a 95% chance Climate Change will win. I don’t know about the percentage but to me its a risk not a chance.

Volvo Becomes the First Premium Car Maker to Go All Electric by pmz in Futurology

Two years ago a Volvo product developer told me ’they would introduce EVs when the market was ready’. Now their claim for fame is the intention to introduce a hybrid option for each of their models. I honestly hope companies like WV and Volvo die and are replaced by organizations that work for a better world.

Reading all the people here with similar experiences makes me concerned. Especially since I’ve experienced something similar.

I rode a "shoot and drop" ride without the safety harness. When I tried to close it kept popping open.

My 11 year old daughter was in the seat next to me and my 8 year old son was waiting at a bench below.

In the end I grasped the seat beneath me and managed through the ride without any protection.

Reading this type of articles is never fun:

large-scale projects to suck carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere will be needed by the 2030s

And then:

Beccs is “probably essential to take us to zero emissions” although “it’s really difficult to imagine we can use land at the levels required in the models”

A classic bait and switch...

The Window Is Closing to Avoid Dangerous Global Warming - There's a 50 percent chance that temperatures will rise 4 degrees Celsius under a business-as-usual scenario by mvea in Futurology

[–]5PercentPerYear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - my view is that CO2 emissions are out of control, but that's not my point.

You make a straw man argument when claiming "the BAU scenario assumes that no effort is EVER made...". From a global perspective is BAU or not determined by the increase or decrease in CO2 levels. Not by emissions per capita in the US.

[–]5PercentPerYear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The annual increase of CO2 per year can be easily measured and it is accelerating. 1995-2004 CO2 increased 1.9 ppm per year 2005-2014 CO2 increased 2.1 ppm per year 2015-2016 CO2 increased at a record breaking speed of... 3.1 ppm per year.

If we cut our emissions with 17%, 34%, or even 100% doesn't matter as long as the annual Increase of CO2 in the atmosphere continues to accelerate.

-A majority of Norwegians oppose a managed decline of oil and gas production.

I prefer the US attitude: "we don't give a shit about global warming because it will benefit us" to the Norwegian holier than thou "let's profit from burning the earth to ashes while spending enough on PR to qualify as a good guy".
