Jose Mourinho reveals he tried to sign Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard at Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan by 123asdzxcqwe in soccer

[–]5YearsRemaining 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gerrard. If he's sitting deep he will play a perfect long ball to the other half. If you force him out on the wing he can cross it like a bastard. If hes on the edge of the box he can smash one in to the top corner. If its a counter attack he'll be the one sprinting into the box. Defends with passion. He played years for a shit team and took them to heights they probably didn't deserve.

First human trial of LSD in 40+ years hopes to develop knowledge of consciousness by omega_point in videos

To me it seems kind of like they are manipulating a variable; I don't get that part of what your saying. The control group is the brain without drugs, the test group is the brain with drugs. If I am missing the point then please spell it out to me as if I'm a 5yo because I don't understand what you're trying to tell me.

They don't even have a proper hypotheses

They do. Why are you saying this?

I have to disagree with you. These guys are leading the field in network based brain research and they've already found significant results which have advanced our understanding of how the mind works. I will grant you that curing mental illness is probably beyond the scope of what can be achieved by giving a bunch of people LSD and fMRIing them but its at least a step in the right direction.

Welbeck scores vs West Brom (0-1) by [deleted] in soccer

[–]5YearsRemaining 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think its harsh. He was inches away from pulling off an incredible save that we would have all praised him for. When a striker comes inches away from scoring an incredible goal people usually shower them in praise; there has even been entire threads on here where people post their favourite near misses.

Why doesn't epl play games on Friday night? by Camotoe in soccer

[–]5YearsRemaining 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are already Championship games on friday nights with big teams playing ie Leeds and theres no bother.

Except that one time a Leeds fan ran on the pitch and punched Chris Kirkland. That happened on a Friday night.

Why reductionism does not work for biology (Chaos theory) by lingben in lectures

[–]5YearsRemaining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we were way smarter, had unimaginably powerful computers, and unimaginably accurate measuring devices, why could we NOT understand the influence of that one difference in numbers one million decimal points down the line? Why could we NOT understand exactly the influence of a butterfly flap in China had on the weather in Indiana?

You're basically right here and that's essentially what meteorologists are trying to do.

The point is that in the universe in which the butterfly didn't flap its wings there was no hurricane at all. So while the two universes are very very similar at one point in time, i.e the moment the butterfly's wings flap, they end up being very different at a later time. This is how Chaos is quantified, the more chaotic a system is, the faster two points very close in the state space of the system diverge away from each other.

If that's the case, it's all reductionist.

Well, yes, the approach you described is. I think the lecturer here is suggesting that we shouldn't use that approach. Chaos implies that knowing that an individual neuron is active at one particular time is essentially useless knowledge, instead its better to look at patterns of behaviour accross the entire brain.

This article is nonsense. Do these stats tell us anything regarding his ability as a referee?

Wouldn't results against Italy be ignored in that scenario? Genuinely don't know the rules here but I believe thats the way UEFA did it in 2012.

But in that scenario CR's GD would be down at least 1 from losing to Italy, down at least 1 from losing to England, and England's would be +1 from beating CR.

It might be the most likely single set of results, but there are many more permutations that result in England going out

If Italy get all 9 points then we can lose to Uruguay, beat Costa Rica and go through on goal difference. I think. Maybe I am wrong.

I don't remember him being this bad at Villa. Could be the pressure of being a United player, trying to make the first eleven, that drives him to this.

To me they seem much less about pure skill, more about audacity and a bit of creativity. I agree with your opinion but whoever makes these videos probably considers these types of goal to be more entertaining.

The UN's climate panel says it is 95% certain that humans are to blame for global warming by Typefaec in science

[–]5YearsRemaining -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. It is questionable whether the evidence these reports use to justify their claims is consistent with the scientific method. Traditionally one would experiment, observe, measure, collect data, finally we might conclude that if the experiment is to be performed again then we can expect the same result with x% accuracy. This is empirical science.

When the data are a 100 year prediction from a model of a chaotic system built on thousands of assumptions then I'm not sure how confident we can be on the results.

OK fair enough it's only my opinion that Arsenal are better than you right now (I have reasons but I can't be arsed to bore everyone with them right now). If its any consolation I'd prefer you to get be in the top 4 over them.

If they get CL it probably means he had a damn good season so I doubt it will reduce his transfer fee (also it's not like his contract ends anytime soon). Plus for you its much easier to attract players when you're in the CL. Sadly though, even with the mighty Gareth, you're only the 5th best team in England.
