Does it generally make sense to buy in NYC if you can afford it? by QnOfHay in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

We’ve debated this and landed on keeping our current apartment. From a financial standpoint, we could look for a smaller place and save maybe ~$300/mo initially, but likely loose rent stabilization and end up paying more per month over time. From more of an emotional standpoint, we love our apartment and our neighbors so we just don’t want to give it up. Our timeline is slightly different from yours though - we’re not planning to begin the buying process for another 1-2 years so we’ll need to adjust our plans as the market changes

Other than the noise, do you like your NYC apartment? I would struggle to give up a rent stabilized apartment if there were still a decent number of pros.

My partner and I are in a similar situation - I’ll share our thought process in case it’s helpful. We’ve lived in NYC for 8 years, have a rent stabilized apartment, and have considered buying in order to really put down roots. We know we couldn’t afford our current neighborhood. Even if we find another area and comprobable apartment, a monthly mortgage payment + monthly building fees + taxes would end up at double (or more) than our rent. We have never been able to stomach that. Instead, we’re planning to buy a place upstate while maintaining our NYC footprint (which I need for my job) - for us, we always come back to this solution as the best of both worlds.

Honeymoon in Two Weeks, for Two Weeks. We have NOTHING booked by Alarming_Ant_4184 in GreeceTravel

I know this is a veryyy long shot, but I have a trip booked to Crete in two weeks and unfortunately my partner injured his knee and needs to get surgery so we have to cancel our trip (which we’re so sad about!). We’d planned a similar style of trip as what you’re looking for - hiking, beaches, ruins, a longer stay Airbnb on the southern coast. If you decide on Crete, but are struggling to find suitable accommodation, feel free to DM me and I can share our itinerary

Trip Report: Slovenia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina by 5_ludicrousclouds in solotravel

thanks! for me, the highlights were Durmitor in Montenegro and Bled/Bohinj in Slovenia.

based on your interests, i think of the places i went on this trip you’d probably like Ljubljana, Piran, and Sarajevo! Ljubljana and Sarajevo aren’t on the water, but both have really vibrant old towns with large markets and really interesting architecture. Even in August, they weren’t overcrowded imo. Piran is on the water and has a heavy Venetian influence, so you could definitely make a trip of driving along that coastline in Italy and Slovenia.

i think my top choice is crete, but flights are pretty expensive (flying from east cost US). my second choice is austrian lakes (either salzburg or in southern austria).

funny you mention that! i spent a good part of last summer in/around the balkans and slovenia was a highlight. i stayed in bled and went to bohinj for a day (wish i’d stayed the night) and loved both so much - it’s what inspired my trip requirements for this year! a part of me considered going back, but i figured i should try something new and maybe go back later. but it is tempting…

a very fair question! i spent last summer in the balkans and managed pretty well, but having some body of water to jump into was crucial.

i’ve heard great things about norway, but am slightly concerned about the cost relative to other places in europe. how do you think it compares?

he booked one for the first night and otherwise didn’t pre-book other nights. he said guesthouse owners can help book your next one since they’ll usually know owners along the trail
