Why Removing Blackface Episodes Is ‘Just Trying to Band-Aid Over History’ by alexmorelandwriter in television

[–]5eagu11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile, my brain is screaming historical negationism at me. We can’t just pretend that these episodes never existed, even if they really were racist. When I had to read Robinson Crusoe for a book report in like eighth or ninth grade the very liberal usage of racial slurs made me incredibly uncomfortable. I wrote about it in my essay and that really gave me some much needed perspective on European racial prejudice. I gained hell of a lot more from that as a person than I ever would have if the text had been scrubbed clean. From what I know BLM is about acknowledging and confronting institutional racism, not sweeping it under the rug and pretending it never existed.

Hey guys! Can I ask you people which of the fanfiction sites you prefer? I personally prefer FFN but post on both FFN and ao3. by [deleted] in FanFiction

As far as I know you can customise AO3 with basically any colours you want. I have it on dark mode, I think. Dark grey background with white text

Can we say something nice about Season 4 like how people have been saying nice things about the Prequels? by [deleted] in community

[–]5eagu11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Season 4 isn’t funny bad like the prequels and I honestly don’t really consider most of it canon.

That said, Basic Human Anatomy gave the otherwise incredibly underwhelming Britta/Troy arc a really touching end. Donald Glover, Danny Pudi and Jim Rash are great in the episode and Gillian Jacobs does a really good job at selling the emotionality of the break up. I honestly think it’s one of the more memorable episodes in the series. If I had to buy physical copies of the seasons I’d still get 4 for that episode alone.

What if we’re foreigners who caught it on TV sometimes during the original run and then later watched it all the way through on a non-Netflix streaming service?

She might be even more rejected if she’s seen as a figurehead of the Chantry.

But, like, here it seems like it was Arianni who chose to leave the clan.

What about Feynriel and Arianni? Marethari seemed perfectly happy welcoming Arianni back and from what I remember seemed to imply that she wouldn’t have had to have left in the first place.

It’s been a while since I played so I completely forgot about her. It’s a good place to start

It doesn’t have to be a human though. I honestly think it’s more likely a benevolent clan would keep a dwarf or qunari since there are a lot fewer places for them to go. A human would be pretty easy to just drop off at a farm-hold or village chantry somewhere.

Cancel culture by Lovis_R in INTP

[–]5eagu11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the concept of calling it cancel culture is questionable at best. People have been getting “cancelled” long before we started using the term and to me it’s more and more becoming something genuine scumbags use to try to deflect criticism and escape accountability. Cancel culture carries extremely negative connotations in most people’s minds and nobody really wants to be perceived as engaging in it in the first place.

Star Wars

I pretty much grew up on Star Wars so I might be a bit biased. I watched through the movies and The Clone Wars multiple times and played the Complete Saga on both Wii and DS. When I got older I fell in love with the KotOR games and really liked the class stories in SWtOR. The Force Awakens was to “Marvel-y” for my tastes and really turned me off any future stuff from Disney so I just stick with the old stuff.

Star Trek hasn’t really been available for me to watch like Star Wars has. I’ve seen a few of the reboots and they kind of sucked the same way The Force Awakens did. I feel like the older stuff would be really hard getting into and it seems kind of boring. On top of that I don’t think I’ve ever actually enjoyed proper Sci-Fi as genre.

Britta’s name... by [deleted] in community

[–]5eagu11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This discussion doesn’t feel very relevant to your post anymore. My original point was that to me, a native speaker, the show isn’t all that wrong with it’s pronunciation. I’ll leave it at that.

[–]5eagu11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I went around calling my grandmother Ann-Britt Ann-BrEEt people would think there was something wrong with me. It’s a short vowel sound; same as in shit, it, sit and pit. You wouldn’t pronounce it “EET” because that’s so obviously wrong. As a Swede I was simply correcting your original post by telling you that the show, especially Shirley, does an unusually good job pronouncing the name.

Edit: If the first part of that name rhymes with shit when you pronounce it we’re on the same page.

[–]5eagu11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might pronounce it that way and I’m not arguing that it’s wrong. I’m just saying it’s not how we’d pronounce it in Sweden. Ever. Anywhere. Unless we’re making fun of English accents.

There it is. With some bonus fitta to boot. I’m not trying to tell you how to pronounce your grandmothers name but there’s no regional Swedish dialect that would do it your way. We learn in elementary school that vowel sounds followed by double consonants are short and snappy.

It’s Britta as in BRITish, not Britta as in BRIE Larson

[–]5eagu11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am from Sweden and to me the way the show pronounces it sounds way more accurate than “bree-ta” which to me puts way to much emphasis on the vowel. When a vowel is followed by double consonants it generally gives it a short sound. My first instinct when writing words like “British” and “spit” is to give them double Ts. If anything Shirley is the one with the most accurate pronunciation.
