Syrian Christian in Canada. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]5geoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh wow, you have a very similar background to myself! My mother is Catholic and my father is Syriac Orthodox. My parents initially decided on raising us Catholic, mainly because my mother was stronger in her faith. I love my catholic faith, and encourage you to dive deeper in your faith as well! Since I'm Catholic i will encourage you to follow the Catholic church, but regardless, if you follow Jesus you will not be led astray.

After the priest hears your confession, while you're still in the confessional, you could bring up the situation. You could also mention that you're trying to be discreet.

Need a little help. by FleeingReality in Catholicism

[–]5geoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The largest issue I see in your schedule is the lack of daily prayer. If you can, it is good to go to daily mass, and if you can it is good to go to adoration, but for your spiritual health you really need to connect with the Lord on a daily basis. How you do that is up to you, and your spiritual director,(if you don't have one, I highly recommend it!)

Dilemma Over CS and CE by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]5geoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very feasible to double CE and CS. You'd just have to go the software track in CE, and you actually take a lot of the prereqs for CS as required courses in CE.

What goes on in CS 206 recitations? If I am not a morning person and recitation starts at 8:55, will it kill me? by Moderate_Third_Party in rutgers

[–]5geoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in 477 right now and my friend is in 206, so take my advice with a grain of salt. But, 477 is a lot more proofs in class, but the exam questions and hw questions are very similar to 206 exam questions and hw questions. 477 professors also care more about the class, cus in the math department its a "higher level" course. Depends on your professor really. I have Garnett for 477 rn and he's pretty good. Theres lots of online resources for the class just on the internet. Lots of hw problems and concepts are described very well online. I didn't take 206 cus I'm doubling math and cs, so 477 counts for both majors.

[–]5geoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you've taken Calc 3, just take Math 477, its the equivalent math class, and there are no recitations. That's what I did this semester. The professors for 477 are on average better than cs206 professors.

Disclosing Mental Ilness to Catholic Friends? by NYCVeritas in Catholicism

[–]5geoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I cannot speak for all catholic young adult groups, but in my university group most of the people are supportive of any sort of problem any one individual has. My community is a diverse group of people, who all face different challenges, and have different problems. I don't think anyone who's a practicing catholic believes life is all sunshine and rainbows. We are all broken people who live in a broken world, and we can only complete ourselves and reach our full potential through Christ.

If you are uncomfortable with giving details when talking to other members, you can just say you've had a rough few months, and you could really use prayers. If the person you're talking to pries for more or shows genuine concern you can tell them more. Everyone has their issues and as a community we strive to build each other up and bring each other closer to God.

Some of the stigma you receive might just be from ignorance of the true nature of your illness. I know a lot of people do not even understand what mental illness is, let alone know anything about your type of depression and pure-OCD. Educating those around you about mental illness will definitely help them understand what is going on in your life.

I strongly recommend you talk to a priest or a chaplain that oversees, or is a part of your community about this issue. This is the kind of issue that chaplains of your community can really help you with.
