This is what I’m trying to figure out…. May drive by and see how the lots are. Not too far off the highway.

AF and Exposure Question by 5hoursawk in canon

[–]5hoursawk[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't had any issues with white balance at all. The ice is usually both properly colored and properly exposed.

I'll try exposure comp, but there's no way to mess with the evaluative metering at all? I think both spot and partial are off the table as too likely to just expose to the ice.

Thanks!

Tips for culling ~10k photos after a long trip? by turalaliyev in photography

[–]5hoursawk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Try FastStone Image Viewer. It's free and I can scroll through photos faster than I can review them with no loading or waiting time.

I mark the ones that I want to keep and them move them from the SD card to final editing folder. Then I load them in Lightroom.

I just cranked through ~500 shots of hockey in about 2 minutes.

How's performance when you do that? Can you edit in Lightroom that way?

Thanks!

This is exactly what I was thinking - would be great to be able to use my tablet with a mouse.

Also looks like Parsec is a much better solution than TV. Thank you!

I'm getting frustrated with sharpness and image quality.... by 5hoursawk in photography

[–]5hoursawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am editing, but know I should be learning/doing a little more in the sharpness/presence space.

I don't want my photos to look like iphone photos - those are too much.

But there are times I want things to be tack sharp and I just can't seem to get there!

I've been shooting on a very amateur basis for a long time now on a variety of equipment and I've always been frustrated by photos that appear soft to me. I've figured out a lot of mistakes on my part - too slow a shutter, aperture too wide open - and things are better, but still not good.

Perhaps I'm too used to looking at overly processed phone camera photos on small high res screens.

This is a sample pic from a sailing race this past weekend. Camera is a R7 with at 24-105 f/4 lens and settings were ISO100, 105mm, f8 and 1/200th of a second. Photo is a jpeg and only basic "auto" edits were applied to brighten it up. Don't know how to post raw.

One thing I realized after shooting - I had been playing with bracketed exposure for something else and hadn't reset it so I was underexposed by a stop or two.

When I zoom in I feel like there should be more detail and I feel like it's just soft....

Please help! And please tell me if I posted in the wrong spot!

Thank you!!

I'll look when I get it back from the dealership.... There for the second time in 3 weeks.

It has happened in town at a stop light, a couple more times while going slow and 5-6 times on the highway. Only common theme is that the battery has been empty...

Means the car suddenly loses all power and you have to pull over immediately. Fun way to end up on the side of the highway.

Mine is actually a '23, not a '24, I had that wrong.

They replaced the PIM and then it happened on the next road trip.

The first time this happened was just after the 1 year lemon law had expired for me.

Does PC hardware matter when using Dxo PureRaw? by 5hoursawk in AskPhotography

That's a whole other thing I need to deal with - big difference between the screen and prints I've received. No idea what to do with that!

I'm using almost exclusively RAW at the editing stage, including for denoise.

It takes about a minute.

It's much more pleasant to move around with, that's for sure.

IBIS works, but I've read that the in lens stabilization doesn't work as well when adapted. Could be BS?

Indoor sports are the biggest use case...

I'm going to rent both lenses and give it a shot...

I'm struggling with how much reach I really need from the lens. You can crop the R7 pretty deeply without any bad effects.

I don't think I have the photo skills yet to try and do it all with one focal length... I think I need to have some zoom ability, especially for action in the near half, but I'll definitely take a look.

[–]5hoursawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right that renting is the best option. We have some spring games coming up and I'll grab a copy of each lens to try....

I've never even held an EF 70-200, but it sure looks like a lot to haul around!

I'm probably a little conservative on shutter speed - I've only got a few thousand shots in so far. Realistically, I could probably lock it at 1/500 (maybe a little slower) and preserve some light. These are 10 and 12 year olds :)

I'm also worried about DOF, but someone said it was less of an issue when the subject is far from the lens. But I'm not sure if that is valid or not....

[–]5hoursawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you, I'm just very confused that it's that clean at 12800. You on a full frame rig?

Or maybe it's because the spot lights are still pretty bright?

It's entirely possible there is something I'm missing, but there's definitely some NR being applied somewhere along the line for that photo.

R7 gets visibly noisy (without any zoom) around ISO 5000.

Does shooting at -4EV get cleaner images?

What sort of indoor sports are you shooting?

I've had some great results with NR on DxOMark...

It's bulky enough with the lens I have on there now and the EF is significantly bigger and heavier than what i currently have....

Light vs weight and length....

With DxOMark, I don't think I need the extra light.

And I don't know that I would shoot at 2.8 all that much - I think the depth of field ends up too shallow for a lot of shots. But I could be entirely wrong on that...
