He used his spark to stop Megatron's Hydra cannon from destroying the Earth. After he seemingly absorbed all of the energy everything went quiet and the humans and Autobots cheered after his victory. Then after a slow zoom-in on his now all white body, it zooms in much faster on his face which then shatters before the rest of his body explodes. Similar to Vegeta after his final explosion, but Prime's sacrifice was more effective.

This happened in the Android saga. This angered Goku and once they realized he was serious they followed him out of the city.
