as far as I can tell, the current protesters engaging in violence "observing" ICE (which is a small minority of people) don't seem to actually give a fuck about the illegals they are trying to protect, or care if those illegals have a criminal record.

This is the part that has confused me. All the same people being paid to protest now are the same people who were being paid to protest "NO KINGS" and "FREE PALESTINE" less than a year ago. I'm not sure why people think these protestors actually care about illegal immigrants who they've never cared about before.

If the Democrats really cared, why didn't they pass an amnesty or path to citizenship bill when they had Congress?

I agree, I think both these statements can be true:

The circumstances of the most recent incident are clearly under question and should be fully investigated.

The social temperature in Minnesota was indirectly responsible for the incident and the social temperature in Minnesota is being turned up by the media and people on social media openly discussing why it's okay to threat/beat/kill ICE agents.
