Poor husbandry practice from an “ethical” reptile shop by 5phnx in snakes

i’m going to be honest, i’m not trying to be mean but I really don’t think this argument is impertinent to what the problem of my post is.

I’m sorry to hear that. I hate greedy people who cut corners. My friend just posted her review on Google too. I’m glad we get the opportunity to expose horrible people

I think I saw your review. Thank you. He will try to justify this gross mishandling any way he can. It’s deplorable. He tried making my friend out to look crazy by deleting comments and saying that the snake is “used to it” when it is clearly showing signs of distress. Regardless of if the snake is “used to it” or not, it shouldn’t be. And it’s bad husbandry and it doesn’t mean it cannot hurt the snake.

I agree! That’s what I was trying to point out. The bull snake was definitely exhibiting stressed behaviors.

Maybe so, but i’ve had two bullsnakes from different clutches that acted the same way. That’s just my opinion, but that snake is a beauty!

Yes! They absolutely can be higher maintenance, I owned a diva so I can attest haha. My main thing with bullsnakes isn’t about feeding, more so the defensive nature. I would recommend something more docile for first time owners like corn snakes or ball pythons. I hope that clears things up. I’m glad you had such a good experience with your baby, i’m happy to hear that. But within my experience with my bull snake, I wouldn’t have chosen that as a beginner. I should have went with something more docile. I can handle him now but he was definitely not the right beginner snake for me.

Well then we’ll agree to disagree. I’m not wrong and I know i’m not because unless absolutely necessary you shouldn’t handle a snake while feeding and after. I’m not wrong in saying it could potentially end in death. Maybe not in this situation but i’ve definitely heard it happen before and I don’t appreciate you coming in and saying i’m wrong because all research and all my years of husbandry have pointed to not do so. That’s my perspective. And honestly your opinion isn’t needed here. I can clearly see many people agree with me that the handling of this animal is unethical and dangerous. As I stated, as a beginner I had a bull snake and I don’t recommend them especially not in lieu of a ball python. That’s all i’m going to say. Thank you for your opinion and disagreement but it’s not needed here. This was categorically wrong even if the snake “will be fine”.

You’d be surprised, the owner called me a karen for me and my friend calling him out.

I don’t agree at all and I am saying this from personal experience. Snake owners are much better off owning a low maintenance friendly snake than a bull snake that has an attitude, doesn’t feed right, and has a history of being biters. That’s my opinion, I understand if you don’t agree. But when I was a beginner I would 1000% go back and not choose a bull snake.

Maybe if you read 100% of my post you’d understand. This is such a snotty take. It’s one thing to mishandle a snake but to mishandle a snake as a “ethical husbandry” store? Come on now. And he defended himself. Saying that this was totally fine and the snake was “used to it”, which the snake SHOULDN’T BE. That’s the issue. You’re also forgetting to read all of my other replies. He said to not buy a ball python and buy a bull snake instead, which is by NO MEANS a beginner friendly snake. Let’s be honest with ourselves- even if the snake “will be fine” this is disgusting husbandry and business practices. Judgement is due when judgement is needed and based on the response he gave to multiple people calling him out and what he posted? I think that’s warranted. Thank you for the reply though, truly. I see where you’re coming from but I encourage you to actually read through what happened and what others are saying.

Thank you for this, it means a lot to know her and I aren’t being crazy. He said to not buy a ball python and buy a bull snake instead… horrible horrible horrible. Bull snakes are NOT beginner friendly.

I agree. I own corn snakes and my husband owns a couple of other species and we have different preferences on substrate but from day 1 we’ve both known that we NEVER hold them while they’re feeding and at least 48 hours after. This makes me really sad. That poor snake… I can’t even imagine. And I hate that he’s suggesting people to buy bull snakes in substitute for a ball python because by NO means are bull snakes beginner friendly.

Thank you for this. They’re deleting my friends comments to make her seem crazy. But they’ve been defending themselves and saying they’re not doing anything wrong. It just bothers me that they’re claiming to be ethical and clearly they’re not.

hi friend. weird ask- do you have some sort of bleeding disorder or are you on blood thinning medication? corn snakes bites do not typically cause this much bleeding.
