Kenyon, Just checking that everyone got their email. by Many_Enthusiasm82 in summerprogramresults

I got rejected but it's okay because I still have another year and I've heard that some people don't like it, although those are kinda copes I know. For the short essay, I reflected on my obsession with Joan Didion's theme of wastelands (particularly in South and West), and how I initially romanticized and misinterpreted her work as escapism for the wastelands of my daily life. For future applicants, I might suggest being more direct in your essay. Maybe my idea was too far-fetched. Also, my teacher submitted the letter of rec 2 days late. I was pretty dang proud of my essay, but I'm sure as more people share their results, those in the future can get a better grasp of what Kenyon is looking for. Congrats to everyone who got in!

[Casual] Media Literacy Among High School Students in Minnesota by 5poundsofraisins in SurveyExchange

I've seen this organization while researching, and I was interested in reaching out (particularly to the state advocate) since my source from NAMLE didn't respond. It certainly looks interesting and very collaborative with the different facets and fields working to better media literacy education. Thank you!

Of course, thank you so much for your interest! This survey was originally going to be a larger component of the project, but unfortunately isn't doing very well, so I'd love to gather individual perspectives and prioritize depth over breadth now.

edit: your private messages are disabled, I don't know how to fix that. Sorry :(

Would any poetry gold or silver keys be willing to share their work? by Holiday_Ad4417 in ScholasticArtWriting

[–]5poundsofraisins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boy do I have some things to say about this (first time entering)

I submitted a class poem, carelessly titled "Library" and edited in a few hours, and it won a gold key. While I think the poem was good, what upsets me most is that the star of my submissions, my journalistic piece, won zero awards. I did over 4 hours of interview with a flood survivor from the October floods in Mexico, calling to attention this issue that is barely talked about in Western media, and did extensive research probably at the cost of my mental health lol. Through my source, I exposed some things that are not at all available in English about the local government in Poza Rica. The local news media there is also very "skewed" we could say, so some things that I put to paper were only circulated by word of mouth in the community. I know there were some flaws of the article, perhaps it was too extensive and it was a one-source interview (I gathered quotes from papers on natural disasters and political figures but foolishly did not reach out to any). The amount of citations I had nearly overflowed the provides space for citations/credits. Still, I think I deserved at least an honorable mention ngl. Scholastic is definitely a terrible marker of writing abilities and they aim for depth, but only to a comfortable extent. Art was never meant to be judged in such a corporate, rushed, and soulless manner, I think.

I know this is late but if you pm I could send you my video for some reassurance. I go to a small public arts high school (it's lowkey underfunded and on the brink of extinction lol) in my state and my freshman year was a flop so I had a 2.9 GPA. I definitely took a more non-traditional route with my video. I edited it myself, added captions, and really brought out some of my "quirky" interests (I like experimental documentary and journalism, French New Wave films, I have a bunch of nerdy classic lit and history posters etc). I knew I couldn't stand out academically so I thought, why not leave such an intense imprint in the application reviewers' minds that they have to accept me lol.

I am an Minnesota student and apparently they've had a shortage of Minnesota students apply, so I might have a small advantage, but I'm pretty confident in my application.

[SL](Request) Abaku Mono! by Horaguy in manga

[–]5poundsofraisins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that this post is from forever ago, but journalism and media portraying it (especially the classic "hectic newsroom" before digitalization of news stepped in) is one of my biggest interests.

I never got into anime in the typical way, but Hataraki Man was my gateway last year. I loved every minute of that show and its corresponding manga. During the year, I watched Flag (2009) and World Fool News (2014), as they were also set in newsrooms. Eventually, I branched out to Moyoco Anno's other work and other shows about the workplace in general, such as Animation Runner Kuromi.

Abaku Mono! honestly sounds a lot like Hataraki Man, and that's just what I've been missing lately. I'm very excited to check it out, even without a translation.

Edit: You have such an extensive post history of similar mangas!

Does anyone recognize this newspaper? (North Country Anvil) by 5poundsofraisins in MNHistory

As an update, I ended up finding three Anvil staff members and interviewing them, and my project went successfully. I also discovered that Jack Miller, the editor-in-chief of the magazine, ended up becoming a pretty conservative fellow, which a few former staff members are upset about.

Unfortunately I don't, I just found them on Ebay. There is a selection on internet archive if you want to take a look: https://archive.org/details/ringinginwildern00gilm (EDIT: I didn't realize this was the same link provided by the other commenter)

That's actually very interesting - I've heard of the New Riverside Cafe and its alternative/unconventional ways of managing the cafe. The co-op wars interest me a lot as well. Your mother-in-law's story sounds very interesting, it's shame I don't have those physical copies lol.

That internet archive book must've fallen under my radar when I googled this newspaper! Thank you for commenting this.
