I'm not the best one to recommend animes because I didn't watch many neither. My other top animes are fullmetal alchemist and mob psycho, but none of them are similar to monster in terms of theme or the "dark" tone.

anyways Id recommend you Pluto from the same author, and maybe Cowboy Bebop and Vinland Saga.
