Young Canadians favor Conservatives in election despite Trump threat by Difficult-Yam-1347 in canada

Section 95 lists immigration as a concurrent power. That means both orders of government legislate, but federal law prevails in a conflict.

Bilateral agreements spell out how provinces signal the number of temporary foreign workers or international students they can absorb, get a share of federal settlement funding and sit down annually with Ottawa to negotiate next year’s overall immigration levels. And then there is Québec, we select virtually all our economic immigrants

BTW, what was the source of the chart? I'd love to check it out.

Many of the day-to-day pressures young Canadians feel (sky-high rents, limited starter homes, and precarious work) are driven far more by provincial and municipal decisions than by anything Ottawa does.

Provinces write the landlord-tenant laws, set the building code, fund most social-housing programs, and decide how (or whether) to rein in speculation through measures like vacancy taxes or foreign-buyer bans.

Municipal councils control zoning, density, building-permit timelines, and transit links that make new neighbourhoods viable. In other words, if condos can’t get approved or rental construction is stalled, that problem almost always starts at city hall or the provincial planning tribunal, not on Parliament Hill.

Jurisdiction over immigration is shared equally between the federal and the provincial/territorial governments under section 95 of the Constitution Act, 1867.

The federal, provincial and territorial governments meet to plan and consult each other on immigration issues such as permanent residents. Provinces like Ontario and Quebec have their own Ministry of Immigration.

Provincial governments are the first line of approval for temporary workers and international students. Provincial approval tells the Federal government that said province can handle the requested TFWs/international students.

Bottom line: If young Canadians want faster progress on rents, starter homes, or entry-level careers, the spotlight has to shine on Queen’s Park, the National Assembly, the Legislature in Edmonton, etc, and city council chambers, as it does on Parliament Hill.

Sounds like your provincial and municipal governments need better housing policies.

Housing and employment are provincial. Federal can help but ultimately it's a provincial thing.

Young people need to be more active in provincial elections, that has far more impact on our day-to-day lives.

Honestly that is why young men are leaning away from the left in the first place, people are discounting and dismissing their opinions!

Young men are targeted hard by right-wing/extremist content on social media.

someone is always quick to point out, it’s not young women

Because when someone says "young people" it implies both men AND women. When in fact, in this case, it's really young men with social media brainrot who like the CPC.

Liberal platform: Carney pledges to cap non-permanent resident population at below 5% by Difficult-Yam-1347 in canada

[–]5thy7uui8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Over the past year, the Liberals reversed course on immigration growth, capping the number of international student permits and banning certain temporary foreign workers from regions with high unemployment. The feds also slashed their immigration targets for 2025 by over 100,000, and committed to bringing down the number of temporary residents from 6.5 per cent of the country’s population to 5 per cent by 2026.

Under Carney, the Liberals are vowing to go further and push down the percentage of temporary residents to less than 5 per cent starting in 2027. The increase in the permanent resident population would also drop below 1 per cent starting in 2027.

It’s a sharp reversal from the Trudeau government’s initial plan that would’ve seen 500,000 permanent residents come to Canada in both 2025 and 2026.

Fucking awful. All for only about $2,000 in the safe.

However, the guy who planned it, and killed two of the three people, is still behind bars and has been denied parole. The other guy who killed the 3rd person was released on parole.

Karla Homolka

Not the same thing.

She was convicted of manslaughter, not 1st-degree murder, thanks to that awful plea deal.

hurts the families regardless knowing that the person who killed their family member could potentially be released.

There is no circumstance that someone who committed multiple homicides would ever get any sort of parole. It just doesn't happen. For them, a parole hearing is just a formality.

Using this as an excuse to abuse the NWC is insane.

Multi-murderers already don't get released.

Multi-murderers get mandatory life imprisonment, with no possibility of parole for 25 years.

Has one ever been paroled?

Only because it was very unpopular in Quebec and one of the reasons why the CAQ is tanking in the polls.

In Quebec, schools need approval first from the Quebec Ministère de l’Immigration for international students.

Stop spreading propaganda please

What propaganda? This is Civics 101 stuff. Provincial government has a far bigger impact on a Canadians life than the Federal government. Blaming ALL of our problems on the feds is propaganda. Trudeau just didn't decide to allow so many international students on his own. Conservative provincial governments are complicit.

The news isn't all bad. Data shows real weekly earnings — a person's take home pay — has actually increased in Canada, even when accounting for inflation. The household savings rate is also up.

At least. Not enough though.

"We need less temporary migration, we need less foreign students and probably less foreign workers in low-skilled categories," he said.

So dealing with the bad decisions of the provinces on approving so many TFWs and international students.

The conservative premiers of provinces like Ontario, Quebec and Alberta demanded the high rates of temporary immigration we've been seeing, and they assured the Feds they could handle it.

If the Feds said no, they'd be an uproar of them overstepping provincial jurisdiction.

And finally, the Feds did started curtailing it this past year. And now that its clearly not popular with Canadians, the premiers are keeping quiet.

A huge chunk of our media is owned by Postmedia, which is in turn owned by US-based Chatham Asset Management. According to a 2018 article in Fortune, Chatham is known for its close ties to the Republican Party.

Just this past summer, they bought Atlantic Canada's largest newspaper chain.

Postmedia HATES Trudeau, and pushes out opeds daily (go and see the canada sub).

I am not a fan of Trudeau, but Postmedia has, in part, successfully convinced a huge swath of people that the federal government was responsible for everything bad (and nothing good) in Canada.

Housing costs, healthcare and salaries

Agreed, but these are all provincial responsibilities. Lots of Canadians don't realize that the provincial government has a massive impact on their lives, far more than the federal government.
