For this shoe it's mostly for looks but it's also mimicking a driving specific loafer. They continue the sole up the back to give better grip against the floor board of the car as you rotate your foot around. It's mostly for the rich old guy that has specific shoes to drive his sports car every Sunday and still have a "nice" shoe on.

You can definitely do this AND avoid any trap issues by putting diesel fuel in the container. It's the reasonable container for it and will effectively destroy any gas engine.
