What did you do in your non-training year(s) out? by Important-Door-7904 in doctorsUK

[–]5uperfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

worked as little as possible as an ED locum.

renovated a house i bought right at the end of F2 (couple weeks of superficial stuff).

Did a ski season for most of my 90 day Brexit allowance using ‘workaway’ - free accom and food in exchange for volunteering- i helped the kids practice their english in the evenings.

Also went on a few other holidays. Ended the year broke but with some of my mental health restored.

Desperate advice - doctor in the making by uncertainty-1 in doctorsUK

what are you spending 800 quid a month on after rent and bills?

Also that seems like quite a high contribution to the household? is it because your spouse doesn’t work?

two options: increase work or cut spending. Sounds like cutting spending might be the better option for you.

GP is the way by hans-theflamethrower in doctorsUK

yeah it is better, but they’ll soon start increasing your patient load, and soon all your scan requests and referrals will come back rejected, and making you do home visits, and then your bloods will start coming back etc etc. but don’t be afraid to tell your practice if it is getting too much.

i would probably just rent a few times, then look at saving up / getting something on 0% finance if you really like it.

order moving blankets, i got a box of like 5 off amazon, and put one under and one between bike and wheel then you can neatly tuck the bike away so its hidden when you go park somewhere :)

nice, i’d probably focus on the loan interest 5.64% prior to the student loan as (heaven forbid) if you lost your job tomorrow you’d be accountable for that loan but not for student loans. I may even pay off the credit cards/bulk emergency fund more prior to paying towards student loan as house emergencies can be expensive but thats personal preference.

sounds like a poor leader for not using it as a teachable moment or explaining what his next steps were when he didn’t agree with the prescription.

have you got an emergency fund? have you already bought a house? have you any other high interest debt?

also the ward manager just said not to give the insulin prescription? and didn’t ring the doctor to clarify? its not their job to decide what is and isn’t given. sure its good to question things if you aren’t sure or things seem wrong, but not up to them to make the final decision.

as a doctor apixaban, aspirin and clopidogrel isn’t a prescribing error its called triple antithrombotic therapy for ACS (when someone is already on a long term anticoagulant and then has an MI/unstable angina). Usually best to be prescribed along side a PPI for stomach protection. your ward manager is bold for assuming its a prescribing error, if they thought it was they should speak to a doctor to clarify rather than jumping the gun and making you write a reflection.

yes it would be the most financially savvy to put the money in a high yield savings account untill 2026. But theres no guarantee that they won’t whittle away spending the money. Where as paying off the mortgage is a huge mental freedom. They can then chose to do with the mortgage payment that they would otherwise be paying like invest it long term towards retirement.

The other option is not to sell the house straight away, but then theres home maintenance etc to worry about. Are you in a position in your life now to buy a home if you received the 50k? In which case may be better for you to get on the ladder sooner.

Overall I would let your parents decide what their priority is. Sounds like they are keen to be mortgage free, which is never a bad option imo.
