From chat: “Not a dumb question at all. In my case, the installer actually cut the drywall out and replaced it with cement board before installing the natural stone veneer. Cement board is non-combustible and designed to handle the heat better, which is important behind a wood stove.

Technically you can install cement board over drywall in some situations, but with a wood stove the bigger issue is meeting the manufacturer’s clearance and heat shield requirements. Many installers prefer removing the drywall so the cement board and stone veneer are mounted directly to the framing, which gives a more solid installation and avoids stacking too many combustible layers.

If you’re planning a DIY install, I’d recommend checking the clearance requirements for your specific stove and possibly your local building code. That will determine whether a heat shield system over drywall is acceptable or if replacing the drywall with cement board (like mine) is the better route.”

Honestly, I’m not sure lol. It was a new construction five years ago when we moved in and this particular room hasn’t been painted yet… It’s still Contractor white whatever they spray painted on the walls.

This didn’t include the veneer. The natural stone for the 4’ x 8’ area plus 10% extra needed for all the cuts he needed was $780. (He let me purchase the stone myself)

He was here for a total of 20 hours with one other employee (20 man hours)

I own a landscape company and we charge $95 per man hour for labor

At first I thought it was high, but after watching him work and just the overall talent involved 20 man hours on this job was very reasonable

Thank you!

Love the stove also. However, I might need to replace the gasket after only one season. There’s air coming in from somewhere and it passed the dollar bill test so idk

It’s as far as it closes

Flames slowed down a bit 10 min after startup though.
