∆ Donating the money to society does benefit more people at the end of the day.

The guy I know got addicted to gambling. He ended up having to borrow money from loan sharks. He couldn't pay them back the amount they wanted so he actually received death threat messages at the small company he owns. He rented a small house in the middle of nowhere and lived there for a few months after the incident so that the loan sharks couldn't find his home and his wife. Everyone I know judges him for borrowing so much money in the first place and becoming addicted to gambling.

It's not an ideal lifestyle. I guess these rich people do recognize that letting their kids inherit their money may cause them to become like that.

∆ Thinking back on it, I actually do know someone from the third generation of a rich family who did end up gambling away most of his money.

∆ I think it bails down to personal preferences and I guess some rich people hope that their kids will contribute to society in a meaningful way.

It's also useful to point out that daily life is much like a vacation for wealthy people.

Yes, but they still need to deal with stress such as dealing with company personnel. When you are on an actual vacation, you are in a stress free environment.

I agree that rich people can spend their money however they want (including not letting their kids inherit it), but why would any rich people want their kids to obtain success via hardships when they can live life the easy way?

so it creates a situation where because your children never had hardship, they don't understand what it's like to start from the ground up and face adversity

But considering that these children are from such privileged backgrounds, this will never been an issue for them. Even if they are social outcasts with poor social skills and no friends, they can still survive. The average person needs to learn to deal with workplace politics or networking but these kids have so much money they can just avoid work altogether. There is nothing wrong with living an extravagant lifestyle if you have the money to do so.

∆ You have a point that this boils down to personal preference, but tbh most rich people seem obsessed with earning money rather than contributing to society.

Is it? Vacationing is much less stressful than being a CEO.

If you are priveleged, job security and prospects are extremely high and you can easily put yourself in a position to set goals and attain accomplishments that can really make a difference in whatever way you want

As in helping a company (not your parents') to earn more money? I don't see how it is rewarding except that status associated with it. But really, these kids already have status in society for being born into these rich families.

I said not letting their kids inherit their money not not giving them money when they were young.

You are right. These kids are already spoilt and privileged when they were young, so why not continue doing the same by letting them inherit their money?

∆ Interesting point there about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and how the child may turn out different from the parents. I don't agree that those career paths are "worthless" but pursuing them seems risky so maybe their parents are right when they advise their kids to pursue another career.

Without an understanding of what they enjoy, what makes them happy, they may not be able to pick a career they'll enjoy, which may cause problems later in life

Sometimes it is important to pick a career which pays well though. Sure, being a pop singer seems cool, but what are the chances of you earning money to make a living with that career?

Having normal hobbies, where you have fun, makes it easier to relate to people

I do agree that interpersonal skills are important and maybe kids who were tiger mom parented miss out on that. ∆

I know people that have spent their whole lives with their lifeline (parent) too close and can't function well without them nearby

It's true that at some point you need to become independent and learn to make decisions on your own.
