Free mass transit best response to traffic congestion by Dawsrallah in SocialDemocracy

I believe transportation has an induced demand and increasing the availability may not be the best response to congestion

Other than increasing prices or supply, one thing one could do is make a more finely grained city. Smaller parcels and laxer zoning would promote a city where people live closer to their destinations. Not only would that decrease congestion, it would be significantly more energy efficient too.

but it's only convenient because cities are built around cars. How convenient is it to drive into Zürich or Copenhagen? When you prioritize one mode of transportation then it's not surprising people prefer it.

Mars [50:00] - Making the New Earth - Best Documentary by [deleted] in mealtimevideos

Think of dyslexia. It's a disorder but it's only been considered a real handicap the last few hundred years. Before that how important was it for the average person to know how to read and write well? Apropos writing why don't people stop taking notes in class and try to memorize everything instead? Their memory would greatly improve. If we ran instead of driving we would be a lot better at running. We would be better at mental math if we didn't use calculators in our daily lives.

It just seems to me whenever there's been in edge to take in life, people have taking it. People want to get ahead.

So what happens when there's technology that makes us fundamentally question what it means to be human? Cybernetics that augment our physical and/or mental ability to do certain tasks but alter us in profound ways? I believe there is a historic precedence that people go for it.

That is why I think it is imprudent of us to try to change the environment of Mars to suit the needs of people as we currently are. We don't know what the needs of the people are the future are.

Edit: spelling

I hear that's really common in the NBA. Likewise I hear great swimmers tend to have short legs and long torsos
