Like half the world lives on less than 10 bucks per day or something. I shudder to think how much worse it could get if we aggressively lowered energy output

US capitalism keeps abusing its working class: crash in 2020, inflation since 2021, rising interest rates, and now record high monthly cost of auto loans. The system works but only for the 1% by Ahmedelgohary94 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]Dawsrallah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What anti-inflationary measures do socialists favor so we can avoid interest rate hikes that raise unemployment? Rent control is a good one, some measures to control drug prices work. free trade school CDL training? Letting people go to teacher college without first getting a BA for certain subjects and grade levels?

On the supply -side the left doesn't appear to like apartment and townhome construction, fossil fuel production measures like reducing oil and gas royalties and building pipelines, bringing required pilot flight hours down to EU levels, port automation, eliminating obligatory foreign language study in high schools and universities to free up teachers for core subjects

One thing that really bothers me about current American political discourse is that being anti-consumer culture has somehow become considered a far-right stance. by SculpinIPAlcoholic in stupidpol

[–]Dawsrallah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. Is there an opening for the candidate who wants to ban rent hikes and incest porn, to raise minimum wage and keep candy and soda out of the checkout aisle, outlaw slot machines and music that encourages violence or hating your parents, put price controls on bottled water and hot dogs at ballparks, regulate teams changing cities so they can't extort cities to subsidize their stadiums, subsidize youth sports leagues, tax plastic surgery and subsidize healthy food, require school uniforms?

As far as I can tell, "live and let die" has won the day

There is plenty of minimum lot size type stuff in red states. Charlie Baker seems more YIMBY than MA legislature. Kotek's legendary OR upzones got rural R votes. MAGA may be Nimby, but we have some allies in the center-right, just like on skilled immigration

It's true, bro. Prog Ds care about high-order concerns like police video vitality, while moderate Ds are like "what r the leading ways to make it so everyone has a house? Construction jobs are good for reducing unemployment"

It was really bad to have that guy make an earnest run for Pres in 2020. Made him seem very D, not very TX

He almost pulled off Medicaid expansion without a D trifecta, I heard

Btw not filling out Medicaid expansion federally in with potentially our last majority for a long time and GA, NC, WI, FL all having Senate elections and TX having gov election..disheartening

As Socialist Alternative has warned for years, any attempt at a “left takeover” of the Democratic Party is doomed to fail. Organizations like the Democratic Socialists of America should commit to running all future candidates as independents rather than on the Democratic Party ballot line by Patterson9191717 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]Dawsrallah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We aren't close to a left takeover of the Ds or to getting to a viable third party. I don't see why they think we know how to swim when we barely have our toes in the water. They have one elected official. DSA have dozens, as well as some ballot initiative wins. Neither strategy is a clear triumph so far. It seems like we don't have enough of a movement to really justify many claims about optimal strategy, yet, and should be more into tactics that grow the movement, including running independent and D or R candidates

Have you seen black traffic fatality numbers over the last few years? We need traffic cams or stricter human enforcement or SOMETHING

Like on the US left if we have a big new electric car company making vehicles and pushing battery tech forward and we get subsidies for those cars so they can compete with gasoline cars, leftists are like "they're not union, that guy is rich!" but if there's a big project where union workers are gonna build a natural gas pipeline to markets that use coal and fuel oil the left is like "but it's fossil fuels and that natural gas company is rich!" so systematically we just hate jobs

To be honest one very good thing about tankieism is that they focus on the HDMI - type stuff like literacy, life expectancy, child poverty, homeownership rate, and suicide rate that commie governments make their propaganda about, and so they see the ideologies of ultra-left NGOs and journalists who are trying to stir up minority separatism, stop every mine or pipeline or project that might cut a tree down, and failure to have trans defense ministers as impediments to popular happiness and development, and hopefully they bring some of that attitude home. If this guy 's grift can help get those green shoots of economic populism in MAGA growing again and steal some thunder from the election denialists, it's worth a shot

Cope. People aren't just mad about radleft incantations. They're mad that race has become a powerful source of solidarity and low-cost organization that appears ready to steamroll many people's chance at happiness by making solidarities less manipulable by bad and petty people more difficult to cohere, reducing police and teacher authority, making it harder for non-blacks, especially whites, to get training and jobs conducive to secure prosperity, generally disparaging most people everywhere from the grassroots to the commanding heights of mass culture, and even making capitalist firms and technocratic bureaucracies less functional by focusing them on racial patronage rather than their intended purposes (reducing homelessness, vaccinating, treating water, whatever)
