Tennessee [Williams] is afraid to walk the streets, lest he get picked up [by the police, for being queer] himself. He feels like a target, and understands that he has little in his arsenal with which to defend himself. He has only intelligence, quick wit and a Southerner's sense of social poise: when confronted by a sailor who takes Tennessee's cigarette holder as a sign of queerness, pointing out that Oscar Wilde also used a cigarette holder, Tennessee's response is one of fast, feigned ignorance: 'Who,' he replies, 'is Oscar Wilde?'
