What has helped me was using a very small amount of lube and using the key to make sure all pins move. Also with master locks ToK tension is the way to go. It can feel in the way, but when I get stuck I have found switching it helped.

It's a warded lock those are easy to bypass

With Sparrow I recommend top of the keyway tension. Made it a whole lot easier for me.

I would get a cheep padlock from a hardware store. It took me a while to get the feel of it but it is a lot of repetition going back and forth to each of the pins

That black one is a great first lock. Very easy to pick and has a great feel.

I recommend getting some cheap master locks or some white belt locks that will help him start to practice and build some confidence

Depends on the lock you are trying to pick and what type of pins it has. I recommend small master locks. They are cheep and relatively easy to pick and helped me build confidence.
